Current Robert Edward Auction

This is quite an amazing auction. It seems that every famous pre-war card is here including the holy grail. There is also quite a few of the 1953 Topps original art pieces including stars such as Eddie Matthews and Pee Wee Reese. (Makes me wonder what the Mantle would bring now. Remember it sold for over $100,000 during the original Topps archives auction in, what, 1989?)

REA always puts up a great auction. They have a little bit of everything from the Holy Grails to cards from the 50's and everything in between...

    Great stuff...Donato

They don't have any 1987 Topps cards, so I won't be bidding.
  • PSA 1 going for $230,000. Not surprising, but, Wow.

I saw that '53 Mathews artwork a few days ago on a guy's blog. Just phenominal.

I just opened the catalog, and all I can say is wow. If I didn't have to leave the house, I could look at it all week.

When I got my catalog in the mail, my wife said, "Here is your 'drool book' ".

As amazing as their auction typically is, this year's offerings seem to be down versus last year. I wouldn't be surprised to see this auction net about 80% of last year's total. Still not bad, but last year was an absolutely insane offering spanning a wide breadth of material for almost all collectors.

Just got my catalog today, and it will become choice reading material next to the
throne for the next couple weeks. image Love that fresh catalog smell!

Really curious to see how the Just So Buck Ewing finishes out.
That's a cool find, and an incredible card with a story.

There is a 1914 Marsuma graded golf set (#2 all time) and a 1927 Churchmans famous golfers small size set (#1 all time) already at pretty high levels for bidding. The Churchman set went from 4K to 13K in a whim.

I guess vintage golf is pretty strong!

  • I like the 33 Goudey sheets, especially the Bengough sheet. I'd rather have that than a Lajoie or high grade Ruth or Gehrig. The sheet looks amazing, even with a few flaws.

PSA 1 Wagners use to sell for $100-150 k, not that long ago.

That 63 Topps Rose SGC 98 looks ridiculous. The edges look like they'd cut your hand.

I think he means that he just likes looking at nice pictures of cards on the throne, not cards he intends to bid on. I think the cards one seriously intends to purchase quite often are viewed in catalogs while sitting on the living room couch or recliner. I've heard some people do it this way because decisions made on the throne aren't always made using sound judgement. Just what I've heard.

    Classic! image

and, yep, that's what I meant.... no intentions of bidding, just enjoy the stories and pictures.
Although I can see how my comments could be misconstrued, Steve.

Also have to agree with the OP on the '53 Topps original art. Just an incredible combination of
    baseball cards, art, and Americana.

    No problemo! image

I just wanted to make sure you knew the auction was ending May 1st. It seems there is always someone here who gets a late catalog and doesn't realize the auction is ending so soon.

Oh, and great answer Ulysses! image
