Need a little help please. I have a copper nickel my grandfather found in change.

I was wondering if it is worth anything? It is from 1988 and it's a Denver mint. It is circulated pretty good but it is all copper. Is it a penny blank that got mixed in? I have found 2 missing clad layers on a state quarter and a dime in the past but I don't think that nickels were plated? I could be wrong. Any help would be great. Thanks
Tom

  • Looks corroded to me. There are environmental conditions, such as being buried in the ground, that can trun copper-nickel to a reddish color. The pictured coin looks much like one of these nickels.

  • It may have been in the ground at one point in time. It looks a little corroded to me on the back. Is that what made it copper looking?

  • If you look at the coin under a loop, I'm sure you will find pitting and loss of detail on both sides consistant with corrosion.

  • There is some pitting yes. Is this worth anything or should I spend it?

hmmmm... what can you buy with a nickel these days? image
Re: Slabbed coins - There are some coins that LIVE within clear plastic and wear their labels with pride... while there are others that HIDE behind scratched plastic and are simply dragged along by a label. Then there are those coins that simply hang out, naked and free image

Oh man I was hoping it was something. My grandfather might be a little upset. A nickel won't even buy gum these days so I guess maybe I should throw it back in the ground.

    Thanks everyone for your help.

If someone has a REAL COPPER NICKEL could you post it please?

I agree. It is an environmentally damaged nickel. Worth face value.

If it were a nickel on a cent planchet it would be a bit smaller than a nickel and parts would be cut off.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!
