If it has not been done before, how about a thread where we list the reference books we use for the

A thread with such a list would be a handy reference tool for anyone looking for books/information on a particular series. Ideally the list of books would cover each of the series of US Coinage listed in the Redbook, including colonial issues, private issues, etc.

The members of this forum have wide ranging knowledge and collectively probably have a vast library of numismatic books.

My hobby library is very small.

For Peace Dollars I have Roger Burdette's relatively recent book on the series published by Whitman.

For Morgan dollars I also have the Whitman book on same (Bowers is the author if I recall).

For 1936 forward proof sets I have the Whitman book on same (don't recall the author).

For varieties I have Cherrypickers, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 of the Fourth Edition (Fivaz/Stanton).

For 1950-1970 Cameo Proof and SMS coins I have Rick Tomaska's 1991 book on same.

For Franklin halves I have Rick Tomaska's 2003 book on same.

I also have one of the the books on the 1933 double eagle (Allison ___________?)

If you are interested, please add to the list.

Some more possibilities for you, given your stated interests:

    1. Stack's 2002 auction catalog '1933 Double Eagle'---it only features that coin, and it's packed with interesting information.
    2. Walter Breen/Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof Coins, 1722 -1977 (out of print)
    3. Van Allen & Mallis/Comprehensive Catalog and Encyclopedia of Morgan and Peace Dollars (latest edition) [Van Allen & Mallis = VAM in variety notations]
    4. Highfill/The Comprehensive Silver Dollar Encyclopedia (out of print; telephone-book in size and weight, contains both useless information like photos of conference attendees but also interesting stuff that's hard to find elsewhere)
    5. Crum, Ungar, & Oxman/Carson City Morgan Dollars
    6. Vermeule/Numismatic Art in America (2nd Ed.)---every collector of U.S. coinage should own a copy of this book

A variety of numismatic literature dealers maintain websites, and all of them are helpful in supplying out-of-print items. Try Orville Grady, Kolbe & Fanning, Karl Moulton, Charles Davis, David Sklow if you are interested.

Perhaps the list that was accumulated by Brandon could be maintained as a nice looking reference that would be a link from the PCGS Resources page under the PCGS Library section.
