Lots of problems with questions like this. What do you use as a measurement indicator? Skilled or unskilled wages? Consumer Price Index? Goods and services were a lot different then.
$1 in 1850 had a purchasing power of approximately $29 today. This is based on the CPI. Figure in 1850 you could buy a couple of DVD's for a buck. Lance.

A Windsor chair, sack back, could be bought for $1.00 in 1800.
That 30 to 1 ratio is pretty well spot on with a lot of everyday things of a century and a half ago.
Actually the silver in 4 1850 quarters was worth more than a gold dollar. I am not sure anybody would sell for that.
