San Diego coin theft

This just in... Dealer and all-around good guy Will Rossman of Florida unfortunately was the victim of a hotel room burglary in San Diego. He has notified the PNG this afternoon that the thief or thieves "...easily jimmied the safe door, repacked my inventory in my own bags and happily walked out the front door."

"Gone is about $100K of raw coins, paper and a few collectibles. Noteworthy among the coins are low grade 1804 and 1913-S quarters, XF-AU 1923-S quarters, a brown unc 55/55 cent, and an UNC 1948 Canadian dollar. There is a nearly complete, full horn buffalo nickel set in a brown Dansco book, a partial Proof V Nickel Set in Wayte Raymond boards, and five varying sized boxes containing most key and semi-key collector coins from the 19th and 20th centuries."

"Possibly the most identifiable items are a large sized GULFPORT, MS national banknote and two hand-carved, silver Masonic medals from the 1860's. The larger of the two bears the name Eleazer Taylor and is quite ornate. There was also a 10KT gold Knights Templar watch fob from the late 1800's. They also took my PNG Badge and Central States ribbon, so if the person at my PNG Day table looks like a burglar... sorry, bad attempt at humor."

"Any information should go to Office C. Zettel of the San Diego Harbor Police. The dispatch phone number is 619-686-6272 and her e-mail is czettel@portofsandiego.org. The case numbers are DR: 10-2236 and CFS: 91."

"Thank you for any help."

Ugh. They better catch these guys!

  • I hope they get these creeps.

Why are so many dealers so sloppy? I'd never leave any coins in a hotel room. Look at the recent robberies, two dealers stopped somewhere to get food. What were they thinking?

When I bring coins to a show I leave them with a dealer I trust. Such a crazy world we live in.
  • It sounds like he had the coins in the room safe? Where else could he have left them during transportation? In the car?

The one thing that seems lacking in these stories is having someone stay with 'the goods' ie never leaving them alone. I see it as the equivalent of walking around with an unsecure Brinks truck worth of stuff - why not organize the travel/arrangements so there is someone with the stuff? It'd be worth it for me.

Absolutely, Ace's all the way. Hope the coins turn up somewhere.

I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

Did they catch any of the other people in any of the other robberies in the last year or so?
