Lots to discover among Peace dollars.

A prominent Morgan and Peace dollar variety collector recently located a 1934-D doubled die coin, VAM-4 (small mintmark), with a completely filled “D.” This was previously unknown. Another member posted a VAM-4 with the “D” almost filled. (Note: the variety with a filled large “D” and doubled obverse [VAM-3] is much more common.)

Here's a link: 1934-D VAM-4+ Does anyone else have one to show?

Although the VAM-4 variety has been known for decades, it appears there is more to it than suspected. The Peace dollar series has been ignored for so long that it is likely there are many more interesting discoveries to be made.

The fact of the matter is that there has been far more attention paid to the Morgan Series by VAM collectors than the Peace Series. I'm guilty of it. For me, its because Morgans are always better struck, much easier to grade and much easier to attribute than Peace Dollars.

Peace Dollars were issued in huge numbers, but compared to the Morgan Series, there are far fewer die varieties identified. While new VAM discoveries may be declining in the Morgans, I see a huge potential for an explosion in discoveries in Peace Dollars.

I tend to think it is a result of wear and not a die chip like the Large D. I would want to see an AU or better copy to know for sure. I am under the train of thought that the small d was the 2nd of the two rev's used and there are plenty of non-ddo of the same rev with a clear D. But to be fair my thought are mostly theory. There is a few different die states of the filled large D DDO

I think the interest in this thread is indicative of the VAM market right now, it seams to me to have taken a bigger hit then the over all market.

The same is true for Eisenhower Dollars which have quite a few die varieties but are not even considered for VAM Status.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Few Peace varieties bring much of a premium, and I suspect a lot remain to be discovered. The 20th century isn't "old" enough yet to be nostalgic.

I've got a VAM 4 with a filled mint mark. I've had it several years now. I will try to find it this weekend and post it for you to compare.
