Good, I picked up my 51 bowman PSA 3.5 last year. Now I just ned the 52 Topps to go down a little so I can pick one of those up. They are a bit too expensive for me now.

I'm probably gonna bump up my purchase date for one, a good looking VG-EX or EX card is what I'm looking for. I'd like to get one before the price gets too silly.
  • Okay, I know I'm going to get flack for this, but I would buy that card for that price. The reason is that (to me) it has more 'history' than mint 8 or mint 9. You KNOW this card was tacked to some kid's wall five/six years after WWII ended. Whoever had that card IDOLIZED Mick or the Yanks or Baseball or all three. And that, to me, is history. I guess it's like buying vintage furniture with someone's initials carved into it. It may not be worth as much, but it tells you more about its origins than a pack fresh card. I dig that card. It has character. Grade be darned.

PM Dizzle, I'm sure he has some nice Michael Jackson Topps cards with lipstick residue on them, that the kind of thing you like? This exact Mantle card (hey, it's pretty distinguishable) sold for $500 last time it changed hands...

It's just a coincidence that the prices are going up, in all honesty all the mantle stuff is overpriced right now and will level out over the next few years I foresee.

Look how much this PSA 5 sold for....ABOVE and BEYOND, even double of what another 5 sold for in the past.

    Amazing 707 sale: 707 1951 Mantle PSA 5 sells for $5250

  • Totally see where you're coming from Vlad, but collectors collect for a lot of reasons. Price/Investment isn't always the sole factor. Just sayin'.
EDITED TO SAY: There are some folks (with waaaaay more cash than I) who may consider this more Americana Folk Art than a investable baseball card. Anyone who watches Antiques Roadshow knows there is absolutely no accounting for the tastes of folk art collectors. It is truly a genre of 'to each his own.'

I don't believe the 52 Topps Mantle is ever going down in price. It is the poor man's Honus Wagner. We are in a recession right now and slowly coming out of it. If you want a 52 Mantle you better get it now because I believe when the economy does take off again the price is going to go up a lot. People will have money to spend again.
  • I think there are more people willing to shell out big bucks for cases of Exquisite and Chrome.

Yeah but if you can get past the centering that's a VERY clean Mantle for the grade. I like it!!

Same here exactly, not sure when I'll pursue one though. I'll find time one of these days when I'm done exacting my revenge against BlackBorder. image
