The article in the May 2010 issue of World Coin News piqued my interest and I'm thinking that I may want to consider a survey collection. The problem, of course, is that this is one of the most "copied" coins in the world. Do any of you have suggestions about where to start? Dealers?

Start with something pretty. Not a coin, but pretty and on topic.

I'd start by studying up a bit on the topic right here.

Here's my one and only example. It's been in the family since 1944, when it changed hands in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

You could also go for the Maria Theresa Half-Thalers. The design is much the same but far less often forged or reissued. They'd also help with some of the indications of the design variations on the Thalers themselves. I saw one othese recently in a line-up to shoot. It was a nice specimen. I'll have a look tomorrow and send on the link once it's posted on Dan's site - Black Mountain Coins
