Bit OT - Coin dealer friend had a hard drive crash - anyone know of a GOOD drive recovery service?
A coin dealer and friend had a hard drive stop working. The drive will not spin up.
Anyone know of a good disk recovery service? Please post info below or PM me.
My friend has backups and paper records, but data recovery would be a blessing.
Here is a coin my friend located for me (it crossed right out of it's NGC holder, at grade mind you, and now resides in a PCGS holder - but I don't have an image of that holder yet) - Todd's photo:

This is a lesson for all of us to back up regularly!
If it won't spin up at all, it might be as simple as a problem with the electronics on the board, and the data might be intact.
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
<< <i>We've used Ontrack Data Recovery before with good results. Depending on the issue it can be costly, though.

true.
and have your friend look into buying a real RAID (as opposed to the software generated ones).
The drive was in a laptop that was dropped. I suspect the drive was not in use and the issue may very well be with the circuit board on the drive.
Thanks again all.

Yes Ontrack comes highly recommended.
Another is Aero Data in Troy Illinois 866-728-3328
Let your friend know that pricing starts at $279.00 which is about the going rate.
Backups are an ESSENTIAL task which every coin dealer/collector that tracks inventory with a PC MUST do on a regular basis. If you use your system daily, then a daily schedule is a must.
I know this from personal experience yet still manage to figure out a way to evade my responsibilities.
