  • Doesn't surprise me... there is a lot of special people out there...

Instead of taking it to a local children's hospital, a school.... he would rather burn it. image
  • You need to read a little about the video, posted directly under it. They did offer to schools, childrens hospital, etc. and no one wanted them.

That is what you call REALITY tv folks. We don't like to admit it but that's reality of what much of our collections are worth. Sad but true.

No, I didn't read that. However, I still would have tried to find a place where to unload them, rather than burn them, but thats me...

  • Here is an idea, purchase/trade 25ct plastic boxes in bulk. Start filling them with cards, use tape/label to seal it. Around November, put the stack in a Toys for Tots box at Wal-Mart/wherever they have the boxes at. They'll make good stocking stuffers, they go straight to kids, and kids actually get to toss them around, pin them to the wall, etc. If anyone wants to start this project in their local area, let me know.

Not nearly as sad as during the 1981 baseball strike, I read an article of a long time collector burning his collection. He was upset that they struck and was going to show them. There was a picture in the paper with a 52 Topps Mantle on top. Think he is kicking himself today?

Before I donated my 80's/90's cr*p to Goodwill, I offered them to the Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago and they didn't want them. Sad but true.

Sadly, the lighter fluid might have been more valuable.

Unfortunately, there is enough of that stuff out there where 10,000 people could do the exact same thing and the late 80's/90's junk would still be everywhere.

It gets me sick when people think only about themselves.... At worst, if I couldn't find a place that would take them, I would just drive to the nearest card shop and give it to some kid who can't afford to pay $500 for a box of cards.

Writting that makes me think about this guy who owned a card shop that I used to go when I was a kid, he was such a great guy! I remember going there alomost on a daily basis, broke, and would help him build sets and all that fun stuff. Sometimes I would go with a few dollars in quarters for the arcades. After I ran out of money to play, I guess he would see me hanging around watching the other kids play, so he would through quarters, like a few dollars worth and say it was raining quarters image Only the good die young.... One day I show up to find a big sign on the door.... image

I've actually got over 100,000 sitting in my shed and a good ol' bonfire is looking more and more like the solution to disposing of them.

I have donated cards to the Shriner's Hospital and they were glad to have them. If nothing else. Craiglist will provide you with someone who will take them. For the record, you could recreate this with a lot less cards, just put stacks of newspapers underneath and springle some cards on there and it would be look the same. It wouldn't take much to forge a signature or use a reprint of a great card to spice up the shot.

    I totally agree!

I looked at those two autographs for one second and could see it looks fishy....

    I remember that!

I think he was in or around Philadelphia. He loaded his whole collection (and some more donated by other collectors) in one of those big 3' or 4' tall metal oil drums. Then he lit a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle on fire with a cigarette lighter and dropped the burning Mantle on top of the pile!

A picture of him doing it was on the cover of Sports Collectors Digest and/or Baseball Hobby News.

It will make you feel a little better if you go to the videos on the right side and watch the top one, "The Coolest Pitch Ever." It's amazing.

  • This doesn't suprise me a bit. Everything is disposable and/or wasted in our country. A little effort to go to a local minor league game or sports card and toy show after wrapping up cards in 100 ct. lots, and just give them away to the kids. The smiles and thanks makes it worth while, at least it has for me.
Any team on any given Sunday, can beat any other team...unless they were playing the Miami Dolphins in 1972.

I don't blame him for not wanting to mess around with Craigslist, I wouldn't want to go out and meet or have one of those crazies over to my house.

If you think kids like getting junk cards then more power to you. The fact is that they most likely throw them away once they get home realizing there aren't any players that they know.

    Exactly.

And another point that get's lost with the reply of take them to Goodwill or donate is that not all of us live in areas where that's even an option. Myself the nearest Goodwill is a two hour drive from here. Local hospital is basically used for emergency room visits by the locals and really don't see the few schools in the area wanting this type of mess either because as mentioned above what kid is going to want this crap.

I've always believed that "burning '52 Mantle" was a fake. It was centered EXACTLY like the color picture of the '52T Mantle that had run on the cover of Baseball Cards magazine a few months earlier.

    I'm not sayin' . . . I'm just sayin'.
