1997 UD Legends autographs

I've been considering investing some money on this set.
How is this set regarding edge and corner chipping - I have some '99 SI auto cards and they are just terrible for edge and corners chipping.
Any good info on this set before I waste some of my free time on it
Scarce numbers or short prints?
Thanks everyone in advance!
Best wishes

1K for a Jim Brown auto - geez....
<< <i>After Upper Deck closes its door you will see more of that stuff hit the bay. Good Luck! >>
They probably still have the 6 or 7 redemption cards from the 97 Legends set that they still owe me....those b*astards!

<< <i>Does the Mike Webster even exist? >>
Yes, Webster auto's are out there.
Dave
FINISHED 12/8/2008!!!
Fake???
<< <i>Alot of the ones I have seen are fake as heck. >>
That is strange. Backs of normal cards are completely different and when the set came out, I would imagine 70% of those living would sign for free and many still do.
Bobby Mitchell I think is the only one who will not sign his UD Legend cards, or at least would not in ~1998. I have a small Post It he wrote something like "Cant sign this card." and stuck on a card I sent him signed "BM."
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.

Fake??? >>
Signature appears good, the card....by the seller account...has the card number that corresponds with the signed cards. Normal cards are not number "AL-###3."

Another landmark for football collectors. This set was the first in Upper Decks Legends series. The photography is great, with color photos of modern players and black and white photos for the old-time legends. The set is loaded with Hall of Famers. 84 Hall of Famers in all and finally the best part... the autographs. Each card is autographed except for a select few. Here is a list of players which you had to mail in to get the autograph, but did NOT sign. S. Luckman W. Wood F. Dean Billy "White Shoes" Johnson B. Trumpy M. Webster (although Webster cards have been seen on the market, it is believed he kept the cards from Upper Deck and than either sold or gave them to friends. He did not return any cards to Upper Deck) This list is of players who did not sign any cards: J. McKay R. Francis (although I have seen 1 signed, it was obtained by going to his home and requesting a signature) J. Gibbs B. Walsh H. Stram T. Landry C. Noll S. Gillman V. Lombardi W. Ewbank I hope this info will help any other collectors when pursuing this set. Please contact me if any new information arises regarding this set.
I did this writeup when I started this set years ago. Since than a few of the impossibles have surfaced. I know of at least 1 Sid Luckman, 2 Fred Deans (I own 1) and board member KLS23 sold the R. Francis, but I don't know to whom. I just recently submitted some of the big cards and am waiting for them to be graded. I still need a J. Brown though.
The last 2 years Ultimate Collection has released a continuation of the autograph set. PSA just put up the 2008 set, but they will be separate sets, not extensions of the original 97 Legends set.
Post any specific questions and I'll be able to help you out.
Frank
I have one in my set. Maybe he didn't sign any of the after market cards TTM.
Now I heard Billy "White Shoes" Johnson wouldn't sign the card because they used a picture of him NOT wearing White shoes. I have to check that card to confirm.
It was actually Donnie Shell. The letter "D" is the main differentiator between his and his wifes signature.
Also, there was an article in Beckett fottball last year regarding the 97 Legends set. That's a good read for any football collector.

Sorry if I was being confusing....he will not sign the normal base cards, or at least would not 10 years ago. The signed insert cards are different numbered (as you know).
I was referring to fakes, which I imagine would have to start as normal base cards.
Clear Skies,
Mark

<< <i>I guess you can refer to the inserted autographs as "official" and autograph base cards as"fake". The easiest way to determine between the two is the "official" card as the Upper Deck COA on the back while the "fake" as the players career stats on the back. >>
I've never seen a fake....was more commenting on the existence or possible existence.
I will dig up that Bobby Mitchell note and get it in the mail to you Frank. It fits better in your collection and isn't really worth anything.

Thanks in adavnce Mark.
Since some of the big names (Payton, Namath, Unitas, Brown etc. go for such big money, some guys have gotten the base card autographed and try to pass that off as one of the official inserts. There was a graded Namth on Ebay for months where the seller was originally looking for $1000. It was an autographed base card. I don't remember the exact price, but last I saw the seller was looking for substanially less ($200-$300??)

I have almost 40% of the set graded, and if memory serves me doesn't PSA label the certified autographs as if they were part of the base set (i.e. 100 instead of AL-100)?
