Is this coin properly graded?

This is a T2 Ike in a PCGS MS64 Slab. Just got it today and seller has no refunds on certified coins. I am very dissapointed in this though. Those marks on the face are in the prime focal areas and there are numerous ones. Those are all small scratches in front of the forehead, nose and mouth and the scratch on the cheek. Would this be a good candidate for the PCGS "buy back" guarantee?

If it's lustrous I would not disagree with a 64 grade.

Luster is good. But so many marks in the prime focal make it seem overgraded to me.

    Question:
Would you buy a coin like that at a B&M shop?

Then Why would you buy it from a flee bay site?

I guess there is a reason to buy from a B&M shop then!

I ALWAYS recomend buying a coin only if you have seen it in hand!

Not every coin is available at my local B&M. Thats the whole point of TPG's isnt it? A trusted third party opinion. I may be wrong about the grade though. If it was a Peace Dollar which I collect extensively I am certain it wouldnt be an MS64. But, maybe IKE's have a different standard. Thats why I am asking here.

Thanks, just wanted to make sure I wasnt crazy before I moved forward. I do not want to throw the seller under the bus, I dont feel as though he did anything wrong. I may send it to PCGS and see if they will make it right.

Did he have a good photo that showed everything? If not, then he should still offer a refund, imho......I know that I would offer a refund if I didn't show a coin as it really looked.
If it is just a grade thing, then I am stuck in the middle on that one as both parties are trusting the TPG service.
I know my MS63 T2 in PCGS doesn't look that chopped up (image for me, image for you)

If an Ike got chucked full of bag marks in the woods and no one was around to see them, would anybody care? Over graded=62+

No better than 63. Send it back for a refund.

I don't like the grade either.

PCGS may take care of you. But it's not at all a sure thing. They may just return it, months later, and say "good enough for 64". It happens.

Don't settle. If you don't like it now you will hate it down the road.

See if the seller will take it back. If he won't cooperate and you feel you didn't get a fair shake because the photos and descriptions were misleading then you'll have to get into that SNAD dispute territory. As a buyer you'll win. But it may leave a bad taste in your mouth.

I'd say a solid 62, questionable as a 63, and then only if the lighting was bad. That's based only on the number and apparant severity of the marks, I really can't judge luster from a photo very well.
  • If PCGS agrees they overgraded it,how does the refund work? If PCGS would agree it was only a 63 (which may be generous) do they refund the price difference between their book value of the 63 and the 64, or does the price you paid come into play?

Could you tell there were this many marks on it when you bought it? or did you see them and hope to make money on a buy back?
  • RampageRampage Posts: 9,512 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'd call it an MS63 if the luster is all there. Otherwise, I'd call it MS62. My MS64 is much nicer than that and would warrant a 65 grade based on that image.

The coin would be over graded as a MS-63.

While I understand that magnification always

makes defects deem worse then they are, the surface

of that coin ,looks like an ice skating exhibition was held

    on it.
There once was a place called
