Specific diagnostics for the 1895 proof dollar?

Can anyone give me a quick run-down of the exact diagnostics used to attrubite an 1895 proof Morgan dollar? I have one currently in my posession, and I want to photograph all the known markers.

Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Chuck,

I can't access VAMWorld (at work) to verify there is a page on the 1895-P, but if there is it should contain the appropriate die markers you're looking for. And just how did a copper guy get his hands on the King!? image

I believe there are four different obverse dies known for the proofs.

I've already taken photographs of the diagnostic marks I could find - three or four photos of the obverse, and a couple of the reverse. I am certain this coin is real, it's PCGS certified PF63. The coin looks right to me, the slab looks right too. I was only looking to see if anyone here knew of anything specific I should make sure to include in photos to help others identify potential candidates in the future.

I will post photos here sometime late this weekend if I remember.

No...I am a photographer. The coin was sent to me for photography.

I created a web page for the coin and the diagnostic photographs I took, it is located here:

Here is a photo of the obverse. If you want to see the other photos of the coin, follow the link.

Let me know if you want a PDF file of my 1895 Morgan Dollar article that appeared in Coin World a couple of years ago.

Wow, for a PROOF, it doesn't appear to have a great strike. At least not to my poor eyes.
