Knocked a Big Card off my want list today-Update 4/20 Card In Hand!

I have been looking for solid/strong Clemente RC's for quote a while, and either couldnt find one that I liked, or didnt have the funds to make the purchase when I did find one I like. The crazy thing about this, is that I picked up what I feel is a strong PSA 6 just a week ago after badgering a fellow board member for months. Well, when I saw this, and after talking to Steve Hart about the cards history, I pulled the trigger on this beauty. Steve bought it RAW with a person's collection and subbed it when in CA two days ago and said he was shocked it only pulled a PSA 7. He told me that every corner is sharp, and that after asking the head grader to take a second look at the card, the reply he got was the only thing keeping it out of a PSA 8 holder is the print registration on Clemente's helmet. I dont see it personally, but I also dont have the card in hand yet. I will most likely be working something out with my best pal (board member Bporter26) to add the PSA 6 I just purchased to his collection, as he is a HUGE Pirates/Clemente fan and would cherish the card. Now if I could only find a Hank Aaron 54 Topps PSA 7 this nice, I would probably hang up the collecting for a while. Thanks for letting me share!

Matt...super card. Looks like it should go back to CA for a review at some point or maybe a crack and resub since the head grader would probably remember the card.

What is your collecting focus now?

Jeff, Not much anymore, I have been looking for a couple key cards that I want (I.E. Hank Aaron PSA 7 that really nice), and always looking for solid Stan Musial upgrades to my Basic Set, but I have really pulled back the reigns on my collecting.
  • jeff8877jeff8877 Posts: 1,164 ✭✭✭
    Matt,

I have scaled back to a few players or cards before but always end up back working on sets. The tough cards come around so rarely that it doesnt keep my interest up for long and I end up working sets again. The key is to having fun with it which I always do.

    Jeff

PS...since your looking for an Aaron RC here is my 6. I finally pulled the trigger on it since I got discouraged ever finding a 7 that I wanted.

It's a beauty. The head grader looked at that and said average 7. Wow. Let's say the card is not worthy of an 8.... why no 7.5? The .5 has completely baffled me.
  • SidePocketSidePocket Posts: 2,901 ✭✭✭
Agreed, that should be a 7.5 minimum.

Hard to tell registration on the scan.

Hard to tell focus on the scan but both the helmet and the clemente batting both look OF. If this card was a common it would be in a 8 holder. They won't give a grade out on this card. I imagine they have to have the head grader confirm an 8 on a card like this.

I would pack it to every big show and sub it for a 0.5 review and see if you can get the 7.5.

When you're talking shipping and everything...Isn't it more than $100 to review that card? Remember you can't mix subs.

I have no idea, I have subbed one card in my life and it was at the National last year. If this card looks as good in hand as Steve Hart says it will, my plan would be to take it with me to the National in Baltimore and talk to Joe Orlando about the grade.

Such a sweet looking clemente. Congrats

Updated today, Card is now in hand. Its a great looking card. Question, How is this Clemente considered an average Clemente? Does this look bump worthy to anyone else? I am not sure its bump worthy to PSA 8, but I think its absolutely on the upper scale of PSA 7's and should be in a PSA 7.5 holder. Welcome anyone elses thoughts.

    Great card!

Unless you want to eventually sell it i'd say don't sweat getting it bumped, it's not going to look any better in a different flip ya know..

I can tell you, he paid for the card not the holder. Great card Matt. Looking forward to see that baby next week.
