I'm mad as **** and I'm not going to take it anymore

Well, maybe not as mad as I was last night, but still very, very irritated.

Simply put:
* I recently sold a cleaned EF British coin on ebay and described it as such. It sold for a typically low price.
* The buyer has sent me several hostile notes over the past week claiming that he has not received the coin, including one on April 12th.
* TODAY, April 14th, on ebay.co.uk, the SAME coin was put up for sale, with his pictures, claiming that it is a toned UNC. Note that this coin is not visible on ebay.com, like some of his other items.

I might point out that this seller is well known on ebay, well known to us who buy British coins, and that he will be exposed in full as soon as I see just how far he is going to play out this charade. I sent him the following ebay message: ...I see that you have the coin as it is now up for sale on ebay.co.uk. So when did it arrive?

I wonder if he was ever going to tell me if the coin arrived. I will never know of course, since I sent that note and got this response today:

Yes. Many thanks, it's a superb example and beautifully packed thank you very much. However, I had to collect the coin from ***** sorting office (yesterday 14th April) and they wanted £9.71 in Customs Charges on top of the £35 paid. However, I am not complaining as you can see the coin has surpassed this amount in my auction. Your grading is very professional and, in my opinion, this coin was undergraded and a bargain. Thanks so much... I hope to buy from you again. I will leave + feedback. The 23 day delay was unacceptable and I hold our postal system to account and not you of course.

All nice, but still left me in the lurch. BTW the above promised + feedback has not been posted yet.

I'm not upset that someone tries to make money on a coin they bought from me. It happens all the time and I sometimes benefit from doing the same. What chaps me is that there is no mention of any of the coin's key problems in the new listing.

(Edited to post updates and correct the word "untoned" which was put in by mistake. It should have said, "toned" image )

BTW, if anyone wants to know who he is, PM me a request. I blocked him from bidding on any more of my sales even before this development happened.

It is definitely not Bruce Lorich.

I updated the OP with some new info. I have softened a bit, but I am still annoyed by this experience.

  • Unfortunately Tom, it's 'Caveat Emptor', Let the Buyer Beware! it happens all the time and we cannot control the actions of others. It's admirable that you have righteous indignation about the buyer and his selling tactics but, he will inevitably do what he does, regardless. Blocking him from future bidding is a good start although he will probably find another outlet to buy his 'upgrades' from. Kudos to you!

    Interpretation of eBay buyer's quote:

My grading is so thoroughly corrupt, and my buyers are so insanely uneducated and/or stupid that they'll never figure out they overpaid 2-3x for my coins.

As to the Bruce Lorich comment, I've dealt with the man for nearly 10 years and have never had a bad transaction or bought an overgraded coin from him. If I felt something might not quite make his grade opinion at a TPG (assuming it was being offered raw), I returned the coin - simple as that, eh.

And most of my purchases from BL are now worth anywhere from 2-5x of my purchase price. Cheers! image

My opinion with regards to Bruce: have not dealt with him, but think some invective best left out or to PMs. I doubt he has time for the lesser bits anyway...I do appreciate the excitement he tries to put in the auction catalogs where not a lot of emotion (or pulse?) is seen. Let's get some excitement going for UK issues.

Sorry, did not mean to pirate the thread. I have had to let a few bad ebay experiences recede into memory and appreciate the abundance of good deals that I have gotten, even if fewer of late.

I've got taken a few months ago selling a 1903 Half Crown in about VF to VF+. It had a bit of toning so being such an expensive coin I put it on as is and with a reserve of £350. It was going very slowly and was sniped at the last minute for the reserve. Fair enough I was a bit surprised as I would have expected it to go well. In due course I posted the coin special delivery for next day and by the following lunchtime it had been dipped and put back on ebay as something like EF or GEF by a well known ebay dealer who obviously uses his wife to do his buying. Anyway within a couple of days it gone well past what I sold it for. I didn't have the heart to see it to the end but I suspect it went for more than £800.
By the way the dealer has a gg in his sig.

Good to see an ending here. I wouldn't be surprised if noone leaves feedback to the other.

Sorry to read this Wybrit- for the coins you sell, you do not deserve grief like this.

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

  • I've had nothing but good experiences with Bruce Lorich in the few transactions I've had with him, but I PM'd WYBRIT with my guess as to who it is.......
