Likely Value of This Coin?

What is the likely value of this coin? I am still learning to spot whizzing & cleaning.

1909S VDB

seller:

a: Has a "ransom note" listing
b: Says the coin "may" have been cleaned
c: Says escrow is certainly NOT needed
d: All sales Final
e: Toolhaus (Thank you, Collectors Universe for listing) shows lots of neutrals & negatives
f: Listing is 'PRIVATE'

For all of the above, I wouldn't bid. But as a new kid on the block, please help me understand what to look for, and how to place a $ value.

All help appreciated.

It may be legitimate, authentic, and problem-free; however, I would not touch it with a 37-and-a-half-foot pole.

    Your link
And I personally would not big more than $1500 as in the 5th picture it looks like there in considerable "rub."

IMO the first picture shows that this coin has been harshly cleaned; look at the parallel fine lines all over the obverse.

Very possible. You would have to be happy with it being "genuined."

He tells you its hairlined and cleaned.

Value? whatever someone who thinks there is a scarcity of VDBs is willing to pay.

It appears genuine. It also appears harshly/horribly cleaned and possibly messed with in other ways.

I wouldn't go near it. At the price it'll take to win you can get a nice original S-VDB slabbed at XF. Many collectors would treasure that above this ruined coin.

If I recall correctly, all the genuine specimens have a lump in the upper serif of the mintmark. I do not see it in this one. Also, is the B in VDB wrong? The middle line in the B should be pointing SW to NE (left to right) if I recall correctly. This one seems to be straight across. I am just surmising based on the quality of the photos. But I agree with everyone I would never buy a coin like this on-line. One of the posters here has 5 at the shop where he works at and I guarantee you they are all genuine.

That's a coin that is VERY easy to find in a top tier slab. It's also VERY easy to buy a raw one that was minted by Santa Claus at the North Pole mint.

Let's face it... $1,500 coin, spend $30, get it slabbed, then sell it for all the cheddar... OR you could put it on a sketchy listing on eBay raw with so-so pics... . image

If a coin like that is not in a PCGS/NGC holder, there's a good reason that it's not. This is a hard lesson I have learned that is true 99.99% of the time!

You got that right. I ran (not walked) from a 55D gold dollar just recently because the seller gave me a bunch of gobbeldygook about "why" he didnt get it slabbed.

that $30 for a slab should NEVER be a consideration when you own/sell a four/five figure value coin.
