The Garnet Star-A tribute to Clankeye, Cacheman and Cosmic redux

I had to bring this back once more-I miss the literary duels with Clankeye-lots of fun when we were young and innocent.

The Garnet Star

A ship once sailed the cosmos
with a crew of forty five.
A tougher band of mates
There never was alive.

From Betelgeuse to Canopus,
from Electra to Alcyone,
they sailed the empty light years
to recover a certain coin.

The captain was known as Cosmic,
the purser’s name Cacheman;
the cook a gent called Jester,
the navigator’s name Ajaan.

They chased the Jaded Arrow,
a ship both sleek and fast,
crewed by a group of lightsiders
from the system Benetnasch.

“Cosmic”, the lookout hailed,
“debris in the star field ahead!”
The captain pursed his lips,
“debris?”, he calmly said.

“Aye Cosmic, debris; a broken
ship and a signal flare-
with frantic radio signals-
there’s survivors over there!”

Cacheman stood by Cosmic,
an evil grin upon his face.
“We’ve caught those rogues at last;
they’ve run their final race.

We’ll recover my stolen crown,
my gothic Garnet Star;
stolen these many years ago
by Clankman the pirate czar."

“MacCrimmon”, the captain ordered,
“more power to my engines proud!”
“But Captain, they’re running hot,
they’re running verra loud.”

“Damn the risk, full power on,
we’ll take the ba$tards now.
Tell gunner’s Boz and Lloyd
to fire a shot across their bow.”

“Another radio message, this
from their first mate Lucybop!
She says they’re in desperate straits,
She wants this fight to stop!”

“Aarrrr, does she now and why”,
The captain muttered out loud.
I know that gal, she’s frisky;
To quit she’s much too proud.”

“Cosmic, she says Clankeye betrayed her-
fed her frankie’s to the engine for fuel.
She challenged him with a sharpened slab
And then killed him in a duel.”

“So Clankeye’s dead is he?
Well, opportunity awaits.
Send newbiecollector over
with several of his mates.

Bring back the Garnet star
And we’ll see about their crew.
If the star can’t be recovered
They’ll bid their lives adieu.”

A launch was sent to the remains
of the once proud liteside ship
and recovered Cacheman’s coin
only to find it had been dipped!

“AARRGGHH” the desperate cry
ripped from Cacheman’s soul.
“All guns fire, blow them apart,
Death to the liteside troll!”

Lasers danced across frozen space
and carved their steel to dust-
when Cosmic’s guns were finished
he ordered engines to full thrust.

“Home boys, take us home to earth,
the green hills of childhood days.
Mount the coin on the outside hull-
perhaps it’ll tone again, God praise.”

With acknowledgements to Clankeye-a bard's bard!
One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics
is that you end up being governed by inferiors. – Plato
