Don't buy raw coins off Ebay, but.....

Would you take a chance on this one

I know pictures are very deceiving, especially on the Bay, but this one looks pretty promising. The bidding seems to be pretty active.

Call me a skeptic, but there's a reason it's not certified.

I'm with Ben on this. I think there's a reason it is raw.

p.s. the seller has a good return policy and feedback -- I see nothing too terribly wrong outside of the cost of shipping in taking a flyer on this one (except perhaps a prior cleaning).

Haha, you're probably right. But I really think something's going on with the surfaces of the 14-S Quarter...could just be the lighting...maybe it's hiding something, maybe it's not. I guess the real question is: is the OP a gamblin' man?

Cleaned, possibly "altered surfaces", but not horrible if the price was right.
But $785 (currently) is not the right price.

Usually good advice for someone who is risk-averse, but some people who really know their coins can tilt the odds in their favor given how many people refuse to bid on raw coins.

Frankly, it may be a good idea for most buyers to avoid raw coins on eBay, but "if it's not slabbed there MUST be something wrong with it" is categorically false.
  • That picture has a heavy photoshop filter look to it. I bet the devices look much worse in person. My first reaction is that a wizzed coin was smoothened in photoshop.

I think I've seen other questionable stuff with this seller, each time I've talked myself out of bidding. Something of this value should be slabbed, especially for someone who sells as much as they do. Good luck!

I agree. And I'm certainly not one who thinks EVERY raw coin is raw for a reason, but in this particular case, there's something up with that 14-S.

There's a VERY good chance that this coin got bagged for environmental damage and was then dipped to remove black crusty toning.

It's obviously been, at the very least, dipped... you know, I'd take a chance if I could rip it, agreed that at $785 it's no longer a rip. Me say pass.

Looks cleaned & retoned to me.

I have had good luck buying raw on Ebay - I am not one of those to condemn the idea on principle - but that coin does not look like one I would gamble on.

Ah, yes, one of those "hit the back button" sellers.

Most of that seller's' listings appear to be cleaned crap. So I would guess that a "hard to tell" or "promising" coin from that seller is most likely cleaned crap as well.

I've bought some very nice coins from this seller and only returned a couple, with no problems. I remember one was a Walker with a couple of faint hairlines, I'm not even sure they qualified as a cleaning, but I had no trouble getting a refund. When he relisted it, he mentioned the marks, even though they weren't visible in the photos. His store has become quite popular, and closing bids have gone so high that I don't shop there much anymore.

No problem with my decision-making after reading comments.

I wasn't aware just how much a [coin] picture could be altered and still look so legit.image
