  • This is dedicated to larrynj- thanks buddy!! I hope you can read this my friend

Disclaimer- If your are going to read this really read this and click the links it may change you like it chaged me!

I collect Jefferson varieties, but always wanted to build a BU roll set of Jeffersons from 38-current. I mainly shop at 1 or 2 shops on Dallas and every now and hten they would get a roll of 54-P's in BU, 47-P's in BU and so on. every once in a while I would score and hit a roll of war nickels in BU. I bought probally 1/2 of my rolls there, never really checked for FS coins nor do I care about them. The other rolls I bought mostly from larrynj who used to be in business in Mr. Eureka. Larry is a stand up guy and loves his varieties, minor or major along with full steps. He has one of the most complete varieties sets I know of, most RPM's, OMM's, DDO's, DDR's, ect. After many years I had 2 rolls left to purchase, the 1939-D ( not a cheap roll) and you really have to piece these together and the 1949-D roll. Larry didn't have the 49-D's so I had to source them else where. Now Larry is truly a great man (he hasn't been around alot due to a personal loss that still bothers me to this day), anyways he knew I was also building a die variety set. I was missing 2 coins the 1946-S DDO and 1949 D/S. After 7 years I finally was able to cherry pick a 1946-S DDO, raw (now PCGS XF-45) out of a bag of Jfeersons I bought from Ron Sweeney. I went through over 90k circulated 38-63 nickels to find this coin, so that left the elusive 49 D/S. I know you are thinking no biggie there are a ton. But there wasn't many BU coins then, 22 in 66 if I remeber correctly. Larry called me one night after I lost my job and siad he would sell me his only BU example a ANACS 65. He cut me a sweet deal as money was really tight, really tight, but he is such an amazing guy he wanted me to finish my 7 years Jefferson set. He sent me the coions and I was finially done, or was I?? I still needed the 49-D roll right. So as luck would have it the PCGS quarterly freebie was a jefferson, so I cracked it out and sent it in witht waht little extra cash I had.

Well it came back a 66, a big price jump. I felt awful and tried to send it back, but he had no part of it! So a little while goes by and I get my job back. Wanting to finish the roll set I saw a BU roll of 49-D's from a sweet lady who was selling all of her deceased fathers stuff. I put in a bid of $140 and won it. Got the roll and it sat and sat and sat so one saturday I decided to look through it to see the quality of coins. The firts coin I pulled out and flipped over, to my beleif, was a 49 D/S. I died. I called Larry and was going nuts, he said check the rest of the roll. I did and found 16 more EDS. 1949 D/S

I contacted Billy Crawford and sent them to him for grading, and

Billy went above and beyond to get them graded so piblished the article for all collectors to identify the die markers Die Variety News- Page 8

But, the real story is friends, Larry didn't have to sell me his only coin and break his set so I could complete mine, it is almost like he was helping the keeping the next generation going, so......Thanks Larry, no matter where you are I hope this story about you finds you and your wife well, Love Jeff!

    Pay the unselfsihness forward

THIS CHANGED MY WHOL OUTLOOK ON COLLECTING! IT'S ABOU THE FRIENDS NOT THE MONEY!

  • Brandon,

Since you are both in Dallas any thought of opening a shop in Schase or Wylie or anywhere in north Dallas. It would ne nice to be ablt to shoot the crap againa nd by stuff. Hosnestly I have a few dealers in Dallas I spend six figures with, atht htier shops, but very little over the web. I come in or one knot (yes I collect alot of paper too) but end up spending alot more than intended becasue I buy a ton of raw and slab, but don't really want it until I see it. Ask John and Joce, seeney and shivley. Heck even Mike and Tina. Bet you could do well, especially with gold, silver, platnium and palladium! NTR and Dillon right down the road?

I'll tip my vote to TexasNationals.

We all have our stories about finding coins or getting a little help from the family, but when another collector unselfishly pulls from his own set to help another collector is what it's all about. The elder collector helping to keep the younger collector engaged, interested and gratefull.

You got it right, pass it forward!

Oh Humble and Grovelling Apologies Brandon
just a mental slip, I get my kids mixed up too....
  • After reading this thread, I would like to throw my vote in, even though its over with.

2 stories here really stuck out to me and I felt I had to post about them.

First, the winner ambros story really hit home as a cent collector, and someone that really likes gold dollars.

And TexasNationals. I also like varieties and his story just made me really interested in Jeffersons for some reason.
LarryNJ sounds like he has a great friend here.

All the stories were a great read, but those two really stand out for some reason.

I know the contest is over, but I still wanted to post that.
