ANA Fall Show Press Release. First Fall Convention in Pittsburgh, PA

WTCGWTCG Posts: 8,940 ✭✭✭
This just came in an e-mail. I guess the ANA is going forward with their Fall convention plans and since they got cut out of the Philadelphia area because of Whitman they're going for the next closest city with Pittsburgh being selected for the inagural show. What you you all think? Let's discuss.

PITTSBURGH TO HOST INAUGURAL ANA FALL CONVENTION IN 2011
Three Day Show will be October 13-15

The American Numismatic Association's inaugural fall convention in
Pittsburgh will be held Oct. 13-15, 2011, at the David L. Lawrence
Convention Center, site of the 2004 ANA World's Fair of Money(R).

The show, which the ANA plans to hold in cooperation with the
annual Pennsylvania Association of Numismatists (PAN) fall
convention, will extend the ANA's show schedule to shows in
mid-winter, summer and fall.

"A fall convention allows us to expand into some very attractive
markets, starting with Pittsburgh," said ANA Executive Director
Larry Shepherd. "October creates a perfect time slot in which we
can hold a third show without stepping on the toes of the other
large shows."

ANA Member Sam Deep, who represented PAN during the Board of
Governors meeting in Fort Worth, said his organization is eager to
cooperate with the ANA. "We see it as an ANA/PAN show. Pennsylvania
is a great state in which to have a show, plus there is no sales
tax on coins."

The ANA held its annual summer convention in Pittsburgh in 1892,
1935, 1989 and in 2004. The most recent World's Fair of Money
attracted more than 13,000 visitors and nearly 1,500 dealers. The
official auction, conducted by Heritage Auction Galleries, realized
more than $20 million. The fall PAN Show, which will be held two
weeks earlier in conjunction with the ANA, already attracts about
3,500 collectors.

Shepherd said the fall show would be similar to the other annual
ANA shows, featuring a large, active bourse; a world-class auction,
educational programs, competitive and noncompetitive exhibits,
family activities and the increasingly popular Museum Showcase.

Pittsburgh has a population of 2.3 million in its greater
metropolitan area, and includes a dedicated collector base and high
level of ANA members & member clubs. More than 120 million people
live within a 350-mile driving radius - including 29 percent of ANA
members.

"Pittsburgh is an ideal choice for our first-ever fall convention,"
said Shepherd. "October is a beautiful time of the year in Western
Pennsylvania. We look forward to working with PAN and working out a
cooperative agreement with them."

The American Numismatic Association is a Congressionally chartered
nonprofit educational organization dedicated to encouraging people
to study and collect money and related items. The ANA helps its
32,000 members and the public discover and explore the world of
money through its vast array of education and outreach programs, as
well as its museum, library, publications, conventions and
seminars. For more information, call 719-632-2646 or visit

Sounds like they should try to arrange to co-host a single show this year.

As for the location, I'm happy. The last ANA show in Pittsburgh was very good, and the city was enjoyable.

What do I think? I need an excuse to visit family and friends in Pittsburgh. I think that if the Steelers play in the 'Burgh that weekend I'll be there.

    Pittsburgh is a great location

NO sales tax on coin or bullion!

So many places to eat and drink

Local hotels All over the place with rates ranging from High 5 star hotels to reasonable rates just outside the city and a short drive to downtown.

Most weekends there are major league sports events.

and a new casino just across the river.

No one loves Pittsburgh more than Longacre, but I am not sure if I will make the trek that far West. The Northeast has everything it can offer to me. I will await the ANA in Boston or CoinFest in Connecticut.

I cannot believe that PAN will hold a show the next weekend. I believe that the new show is being hosted by PAN.

PNG member, numismatic dealer since 1965. Operates a retail store, also has exhibited at over 1000 shows.
I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

    Believe it
As of today those are the dates, unless the show dates can be moved. The convention hall where the PAN show is held will have the final say.

    An unnecessary show.
    All glory is fleeting.

Well, of course I'm thrilled. Anytime there's a big show here I'm happy about it. It may be a "light" version of the big ANA but even so it will be a major show event. I don't get to very many big shows so having one like this every 3 years is great for me.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

How would you know? Besides for the MSNS shows it's not like you've actually been to any in recent memory.
