CASEY JANSSEN leads MLB in wins!

I'll be honest, I never heard of this Toronto pitcher. He is a reliever and has pitched a TOTAL of THREE innings so far this year.

His record? 3-0.

It's trickey when wins go to relief pitchers, especially when they get a blown save at the same time.

In 2006, Oscar Villarreal, a relief pitcher for the Braves, was 4-0 in the month of April with 2 of those wins coming as a reslt of being the pitcher of record when the Braves rallied back immediatly following his blown saves.

By the 2006 All-Star break, he was 9-1.

Anyways, wins by relievers is deceptive and meaningless. It just means that they were the most recent "pitcher of record" when the team took the lead.

One of the strangest stats in this category, IMO, is the old Pirate, ROY FACE.

In 1959, he started NO games. His record? 18-1 ... all in relief!

Relief pitchers were used differently in those days. Face pitched 93 innings in 57 appearances, often coming in when the Pirates trailed or the game was tied. The 18 wins were a combination of pitching well and having an offense score some runs for him. In 1958 and 1960, he won 15 games combined (and lost 10), despite having an ERA and peripheral #s that were about as good as they were in 59. He had a magical year in 59.

Rangers closer Frank Francisco is 2-2. Both losses were blown saves, both wins he came into tie games. One of Janssen's wins came at the expense of a Francisco Blown Save. Baseball's a funny game sometimes.

MARK ... EXACTLY my point!!!! To go 18-1 in relief just about everything has to go right for you the ENTIRE YEAR!!!

Wins are a pretty useless stat for determining pitchers' goodness or badness. Middle relievers provide some of the most entertaining extreme examples of this.
