GreatSouthernCoins?

Starting in September, I bought a total of 4 coins from them on Ebay. an 1851 gold $1, a half cent, a $5 gold indian, and a pan pacific silver commemorative. The Pan Pacific didnt look right to me, so I returned it to them and they cheerfully gave me a refund. They have a 7 day return policy. I then bought the 1/2 cent which was described as "uncirculated", and the Indian was "choice uncirculated". I sent them in for grading to PCGS, and the half cent was BB'd as questionable color, and the indian as AU58. It's now past the 7 days. I also bought the gold $1, and didnt even bother to get it graded, so I emailed them and asked if I can return the 3 coins even though its past the 7 days for the graded coins. They said ok to the $1, but didnt mention the other 2 graded coins. I emailed them again to ask if it was ok for them too, and never got a response. After trying 2 more times with no response, I made a claim through Ebay. They responded that it's ok for all three. I returned all three together, and quickly received a refund for only the $1 gold, but not the other 2. I emailed them 3 more times asking about this, and no response. It's been 2 weeks, and im out almost $1000. I filed a counter claim to that $1 gold only because I cant on the other 2 because its past ebays time limit. Im awaiting on them. What should I do?

I would try calling them. I've bought from them in the past (only slabbed coins) and their customer service was good.

My general opinon is buy certified coins over the internet.
Buy raw coins in person at the coin shops or shows.
I bought a few certified pcgs coins from them years ago
    and were acurately graded.

I think you are lucky getting as far as you did, the typical response when this happens is "grading is a matter of opinion" and you get absolutely nothing. I have never heard of one of these "bargain basement" raw dealers allowing their so called uncs to be submitted and returned if they don't make it------------BgE

I frequently see some of their items

go for PCGS 66 or PCGS 67 money
and you are buying a raw coin with ?manipulated? photos

    - it is easy to hide some nicks and scratches with lighting and angles if that is what you want to do

I get the feeling they have a coin doctor working there.
They have many good date raw coins that look very much alike which makes me just a little suspisious.

Gem Uncirculated Semi Key date mercs that go for Moon Money and above when if you look closely they are AU coins. The OP is lucky he has got as far as he has IMO.

I bought a Barber half from them since it looked so nice in their photo. I had hoped to slab it for an upgrade to my registry set. When I received the coin, the reverse was fantastic! The obverse was hairlined like crazy. I called them and no problem on the return. I received a 100% refund, including shipping. All it cost me was the return postage. I have looked at their stuff again, but it's once bitten, twice shy for me.

I bought a 1919s buffalo that was raw and it had a great strike---- after receiving the coin it most definately had an added mint mark. I called and returned the coin - received a full refund through paypal almost immediately. BEWARE

I hope it works out for you, but you should have tried to sort out what you intended to do before bought the coins. I can see the seller being miffed over what you did. I thought the number 1 rule in all of nusmatics was "once a coin is removed from the flip/holder it is considered sold"

I take from reading your post that so much time has passed that no claims can be filed on some of the coins? Did you pay thru paypal with a credit card?

After reading your thread again i think you messed up. If i was going to do what you did i would have done 3 different delivery confirmed and insured packages just to try to protect myself. They may claim only 1 coin was shipped back, maybe not.

I will never buy raw coins from them... Graded/certified TPG is fine, if I decide to buy from them in the future.
  • derrybderryb Posts: 37,713 ✭✭✭✭✭
An ebay coin dealer that sells a lot of graded coins usually has a reason for selling certain coins ungraded. If you're trying to pickup good candidates for grading, don't expect to get them from someone like this. If there was a good return on having them graded, they would be already be graded.

Contact paypal , for sure, and explain the problem, but I would have sent the coins separately with tracking numbers, it always works better that way. To be honest, with all the negative feedback from this forum, and the excessively high bids on these raw coins they sell, I will never buy from this outfit. I am not bashing them but, I don't recall hearing to many good things about the coins they sell.image

Excellent advice that more people should consider.
    When in doubt, don't.

If the OP made the initial ebay claims witin the timeframe, then the claim is still active (there is no "counter claim"). The case will not close until a refund is issued, or it the buyer loses the claim, the coins are returned to the buyer.

Also, I would encourage the buyer to learn to grade so that he does not waste time submitting problem coins.

Way back in the day (part of the learning process) I bought a few raw coins from them on e-bay, all of which I returned for issues clearly hidden by the photos and not in the descriptions including cleaning, staple scratches and what another local dealer thought was questionable authenticity.

They were pretty quick on the refunds though but they questioned my reasons for returning them.

I have noticed that also. I have followed there auctions for a few years and have only bought TPG coins from them. Because of warnings on other forums about there raw coins.

Just noticed that there are two different GSCs on ebay; One is plural: greatsoutherncoins in LA, the second is singular: greatsoutherncoin in TX (the one we're discussing here, I believe).

I look at many of their coins..... absolutely gorgeous pictures, I'm real tempted at times. But after reading forum opinions on this seller quite frequently, I just steer clear.

That's not to say they don't have good stuff (I never bought anything). "If it looks too good to be true", then maybe......????

I had to break one of my customers in the hard way, he had been buying raw coins from this group for a good year, every one had killer photos, but in hand there were hidden issues, some of them were extrmemly deceptive in the way they were doctored. I sent them all to PCGS to prove my point and every single coin came back questionable color, cleaned, altered surfaces, etc.

That pretty much proves, once and for all, what this gang is up to. They've found a successful "business" model, and they aren't going to change.

A lot of problem coins end up in collections because some folks just don't know or they just don't want to bother with returns. Some people end up with problem coins in collections for other reasons. There are full blown lessons and then there's tutoring. Thank you for both.

    Caveat emptor.

I have been bitten too many times buying raw, submitting for grading and being disappointed. So when I saw GreatSouthern coins, I sent an e-mail asking if the coin I was interested in was original and got no response. No response from them on a simple question means I didn't and won't buy from them.
