Supply of MS68 Silver IKES is drying up?

Five or six years ago I went through a dealers inventory of Blue Ikes (probably between 300-400) and found 6 or 8 that subsequently graded PCGS MS68.

Over the past 10 months I have looked at approximately 2000 Blue Ikes and found only a single MS68.

Without looking, I would bet that the pop reports show a gradual leveling off of new 68's.

It might not be a bad idea to sock some of these away at todays prices?

A yes, Old Ike. My first completed MS65 set.
I have a pile of blue pack Ikes I cherry picked
decades ago. They all looked GEM MS70!

    Blue Ikes!!

MS-67's aren't scarce and 66's are almost common but by current standards I doubt
there are half a million of all dates combined in 67.

There are an awful lot of really nice attractive blue Ikes that aren't worth the cost of
    grading though.

I like the top notch ones simply because they do seem to jump out at you.

I just don't think this series will ever be really popular? Will it?

Part of the appeal of collecting any series is the ability to own the top grades. At least for me it is for this set. 65s are fairly common and so a standout set would be higher grades. I would love to finish up my PCGS graded Ike set, but paying a few thousand for top pops or near top pops is too much for me to commit financially to this appealing yet "modern" issue. It seems like there are some great collections of top pop Ikes out there and it just makes it hard to build one from scratch these days.

I have always had a fondness for the Ike though and I do keep my eyes open for eye appealing coins which can be tough for this series.

If you think that eBay raw set has MS-66/67 PCGS graded quality coins for the clad issues, for a mere $200 or so then by all means! Clad Ikes are tough in the higher grades and the population reports support that. It is not as easy as picking one up raw on eBay. There is a thing called supply, demand, and human nature of collectors liking the top grades for their registry sets. That is something you may not understand, but many of us do. It is truly just manner of opinion, preference, and desire to collect top pops, or to be happy with a set of Gemmy coins. The great thing about this hobby is there can be a set for nearly all budgets.

While the Silver clad coins may indeed be MS66/MS67, I seriously doubt the clad coin are although it's not entirely impossible.

I would strongly suggest you find your finest copper nickel clad Eisenhower and submit it for grading. If it comes back MS66, I'll pay your fee's.

As for the MS67 1972-D, I agree its a bit over priced.
