Card Show scam/ripoff stories

Has anyone ever been ripped off at a show. i thought it would be interesting to hear different horror stories from different people.

I was going to buy a 1968 Johnny Bench RC at a show once. It looked in great condition but as I was about to walk away I noticed it looked a bit short. I always keep a common card from each year with me so that I can do a quick measurement at shows. I put it up against another 1968 and it came up way short. I showed the dealer and he played the "I don't know what trimming is and that he is not really a dealer but just wanted to set up at a show to sell some of his cards." I showed him the two cards and he offered me my money back. I took the $60 and bought a nice 1955 Bowman Elston howard from dealer I trusted instead.

It's always good to carry some commons especially from said brand/year you're planning to buy. I've done the same thing and many have come up short. Other than that, nothing else exciting at shows. Buyer beware!

Never buy anything in a screw-down holder.

I bought a fake OPC gretzky RC from a guy at a 3 day Mall Show on day 1 and guess what? He didn't come back for day 2 or day 3.

The promoter had his number and we both gave him a call. It was a cash and trade deal. He said he already sold the cards I traded him (in one day no less) and needed the money for his family (boo hoo guy talked to me at length about how much he spent on unopened at the show).

Promoter threatened to call the police (good promoter) if he didn't work out a deal with me. I ended up only getting about 70% of my stuff and money back but at least the guy came clean and admitted it was fake. He said that the promoter knew his family so I think that was the only reason he came clean.

Never buy a card like that ungraded or without some sort of reference material on hand to make sure it jives up. I posted it on these boards as soon as I got home and about 3 people in 1 minute said it was fake.

That's why u better know your stuff before buying.
Also if they don't remove it from screwdown holders,
    just walk away.

It so tough to buy raw now. If you are going to send it in for being graded you have to watch out for Trimmed and Miscut.
