Baseball History Question

Not a trivia question...I'm just curious. OK, so do you ever look at baseballreference.com and then look at the most similar players? I was looking at the career of Vada Pinson and I noticed that Steve Finley came up at the top. I never really thought of the two of them as similar. But, maybe I was wrong. So, I got to looking at Finley's career. He had 2548 hits and never hit .300. That's a lot of hits for never hitting .300 even in a short call-up or anything. His lifetime average was .271. That's not Rod Carew or Tony Gwynn, but it isn't bad for a guy with gold glove fielding and 300/300 speed and power. Any other players like that? Anyone with more hits and no .300?

It looks like Finley has the most hits for anyone who never hit .300 in any one season.

I found four players who have more hits, and only hit .300 in a season once:

    Luis Aparicio
    Omar Vizquel
    Rabbit Maranville
Reggie Jackson (hit exactly .300 in 1980 - if he had one fewer hit, he would've had a .298 ave)

  • It's always interesting looking at the similiar players on baseballreference.com. Never would have thought of Steve Finley being similiar to Vada Pinson.

I just thought of another question.....

Has any pitcher ever gotten credit for a win, without having thrown a pitch in that game. For example:

A reliever for the home team comes in in the 9th inning with two out, runners on first and third and the game tied. The pitcher picks off the runner on first base before throwing a pitch to a batter. The home team proceeds to win the game in the bottom of the ninth. The reliever gets the win, without throwing a pitch.

    Has this ever actually happened?

Dean Stone was the winning pitcher in a 50s AS game without retiring a hitter. I'm not sure if he ever threw a pitch.

It has happened. I put in a laborious 15 seconds of research on Google and found the following:
