For those who sold coins in their collections that didn't CAC

are you going to now send all your coins in for the SecurePLUS and sell the ones that don't get plussed?
If so, can you give me a heads-up? I might want to take some of that terrible dreck off your hands
Seriously though, if you like a coin, does it matter if it is CAC or + or even * ?
(though, I hadn't heard of anyone only collecting coins that are *ed)

And some of these coins were very nice IMO, and I would not be surprised at all if some of them ended up eventually being resubmitted and getting a +.
And I suppose it is also possible that some of the people who decided to sell them in the first place might well want to buy them back at that point.

It matters if it's "all (or mostly) about the money", like so many collectors accuse grading companies and dealers of. Otherwise, it shouldn't matter for (pun intended) beans.

100% NO, and I will not be sending in any coins for CAC or to get a plus.

Good point, Mark (besides the ones on our heads
I guess I still look at it from a collector's viewpoint. I have 2 coins that have CAC stickers. I paid the same amount for the coins w/ the stickers as I would have without them (one is a 1916-d merc in VG10), based on their look. I am ok with that. I had one coin, as you know, sent to CAC to learn about the process and, while I like the coin, A LOT, it did not sticker. I kept it, and am keeping it, as I agree with the grade, at a minimum, and I love the look of the coin.
Same thing if it +s w/ PCGS, or not. I will keep the coin if I send it in. I will only send it in, potentially, for the quarterly freebie. If it makes it, great. I get a few extra registry points and I still enjoy the coin. If it doesn't. Darn it, but I move on....and keep the coin

This new service will be for those that choose to make use of it, for
their own collector interests. Some collectors want the best and are
willing to pay for it. This may be crazy, but since it is their money
what ever makes them happy is fine also.

There are a few I want to get holdered...but hate to say it, they are going ATS. only they do the proof like designation for Gold dollars.
In about X years when coin number 80 enters the set....then MAYBE ill have them pedigreed and pick a service.

I found that the process of sending my collection in to CAC made me take a more critical look at what I had done, and it has made me a better collector going forward. It was worth every cent that I paid.

<< <i>I sent about 60 coins from my collection to CAC when they started up. IMO, since I expect to be collecting for a very long time, it was a cheap way to get the opinion of someone with one of the best eyes in the business to review and comment on what I had collected so far. Only about 7 or 8 coins failed to sticker. I took this as an opportunity to really evaluate them, why I had bought them, if I should keep them, if I agreed or disagreed with CAC. I ended up selling 4 or 5 and keeping three. I found it very educational. The coins that failed to sticker (the one's that I sold) were the weakest coins in my collection, and some were bought becasuse they were cheap at the time. I believe that I probably would have trimmed them out of my set at some point anyway. On one coin, I learned how to detect something, the effect of dipping a CN Proof IHP, that I did not know before. The coins that did not sticker that I kept, I really like and respectfully disagree with CAC.

This sums up my philosophy very well. I take every submission as a grading learning experience, and have greatly improved my grading skills this way. I only own a couple of CAC coins, and have not submitted any to CAC or SecurePlus, but if I do it will be exactly for the above reason.
The current market dictates (I think) that before selling a large collection you submit to one or the other, CAC or SecurePlus, so sooner or later it will be done to my collection, I may do it sooner rather than later for exactly what "Abitofthisabitofthat describes.
Why not just ask "If you like a coin, does it matter if it's slabbed?" And the answer to both questions is the same. It matters if you lack the skills to expertly judge the coin on your own, or if you think you might one day want to sell it to somebody that lacks such skills. In other words, it only matters if you're not Dorkkarl.

I think that the + is a different ballgame. I have submitted three coins, all of which are bedrocks of my collection, and none of which will be sold as a result of the + decision.

I agree with this statement.
At this point I do not see myself using the SecurePlus service largely because it is quite a rare event for me to submit a coin for TPG certification. The NGC star program has also in the past meant little to me since it is based upon very subjective eye appeal only and at the exclusion of where a coin might fall within a grade range. However, the CAC option has been one tool that I have been willing to evaluate since the stated goal of CAC is to examine coins for not only appropriateness of grade, but also for surface damage or manipulation. In this respect, CAC is a tool similar to the tools of TPG certification, knowing how to use a loupe, learning how to spot altered coinage and understanding the grade range for coins of interest. Historically, I would imagine that most collectors did not embrace the personal responsibility to honestly and critically evaluate any possible alterations on their coins and this would likely be extended to gaining the knowledge to grade with accuracy and precision. The advent of the TPGs has allowed the newer generations of collectors and even dealers to be completely or nearly completely ignorant when it comes to these personal responsibilities. I have never wanted to find myself unprepared in this hobby-industry and have gained as much practical knowledge as possible and done my research when appropriate. Therefore, I believe it to be quite dangerous financially to those who issue blanket statements that one will never use a tool that might be of help.

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
I would be happy to tlake some of your CAC rejects. You obviously thought they were submission worthy, and that says a lot.

Okay, so you are saying that you want to buy the coin from me in which I missed the old cleaning, the AT jobs, the putty, etc. Great, I will contact you first next time this comes up.
