Collecting psa 9 or psa 10 in new sets

When you are submitting cards in for grading, everyone always hopes for all tens but that will never happen. My question is. When you are building graded sets from the last 10 years how high do you want to go? When is a 9 good enough and you don't keep buying and submitting until you get a 10. On my newer sets I will not go out of my way to replace a 9 with a 10. One thing that I have learned from reading these forums is that a grade is just someones opinion. ( today an 8 or tomorrow a 10 ) Looking at the sports card market I can't understand how people are paying what they are paying for 10's.I have a few psa 8's that someday I will try to upgrade. One little note psa 8 is a nice grade of card. I can't believe the amount of psa 8 graded non sport cards from the 60's that sell on ebay for half the price of the grading fees. Mike

I have no problem with completing a set in PSA 8.....especially the non sport issues. I'm also working on two basketball sets that have 8's in them and I don't go out of my way to upgrade them....if I have the opportunity to submit a few that I think might be 9's I do it but I don't go out of my way trying to acquire them. I'm in process now of starting a few non sport sets in PSA8.
  • I wish I would have never got myself caught up in the achievement satisfaction of 9's and 10's. To the naked eye it is almost impossible to tell the difference between a 9 and a 10. The 8's are beautiful! It cost sometimes 10 to 50 times as much for a PSA 10.

  • Totally agree on the 8 is enough theory. It really helps if you do like myself and METICULOUSLY look at your cards before you send them in. I cannot stress enough how important it is to send in just the best of the best, especially on newer releases, because if you can see a small flaw under 10x, you can bet the folks at PSA can also. Once you start doing this, you'll be surprised at just how much nicer your raw subs will start coming back and your sets GPA will climb! image
