2010 Topps Cards Your Mom Threw Out reprints thoughts?

Hi all, I searched around, but didn't see any specific thread about the 2010 Topps The Cards Your Mom Threw Out reprints (with new back or original backs).

Personally, I like reprints that are readily marked as reprints in the copyright area, so these fit the bill. The ones with the new backs are easily seen to be reprints, so that's even better.

I think it's kind of neat to see the older cards remade with today's technology. Some of my favorite cards are the overproduced years in the 80's and 90's so it's nice to see them "updated."

For example:

1987 Topps Bo Jackson Future Stars (CMT-36) looks great! The colors are very nice, and the glossier card stock helps keep the wood border from being too washed out.

1989 Topps Gary Sheffield Future Star (CMT-38) looks a heck of a lot better than the original (except that Sheffield has a much oranger skin tone). The border is much whiter, than the off-white of the original 1989 cards.

1990 Frank Thomas # 1 Draft Pick (CMT-39) also looks a lot better with the glossier treatment. The border colors are still a bit garish, and the photo is still a bit out of focus, but it's a nice reprint. I wish they had done a numbered version to 1990 with the NO NAME ON FRONT error. That would have been a nice nod to error/variant collectors.

Anyway, I'm going to try to put together a set, the ones with the new back are much easier to find and pull, but I may try to put together a set of the original backs too. I have 3 of the Bo Jackson new backs, and I'm going to try to get that card and the Sheffield up to about 10 copies, just for fun! image

I've always liked the various Chrome/Refractor reprint issues throughout the years as well as sets like Heritage and Donruss Originals that use older card designs for new issues. One of my favorite cards is the cheap Donruss Originals Griffey Jr with 1984 set design. The Nolan Ryan refractor reprints are also real nice. My main gripe with repint cards is they usually screw up my eBay searches. Now if I want a Jeter Topps rookie I need to type in the search box "Jeter (93, 1993, rookie) Topps -reprint -2010"

I hate reprints. I do like Heritage (newer players in old style cards), but I absolutely hate reprints.

  • Yes, I can see how they would screw up the eBay searches.

However, they are nice placeholders for someone who is undertaking a nice vintage collection.

Just put the reprint card in your box where the $5000 card will go (eventually)!!!

I don't think they've done it, but it might be nice to see an entire reprint set (or subset), especially something like a numbered complete Future Stars set from all years.

One thing that worries me about the reprints....saw an auction last week where a guy was selling a Lot of cards. He had very little in the description but had the old rap about not knowing much about cards, said there were old cards and new, etc.....The picture was of many cards spread all over a table including 15 or 20 what I assume were 2010 reprints since they were next to other 2010 Topps cards. But from the distance, and to an eager rookie collector they looked like the originals.

I don't want this to sound dirty, but you have a long poll...

    Ha, ha!

But seriously, as JohnnyD points out, I do see where unscrupulous people could use these reprints to fool unsuspecting bidders, but at least they are official reprints, and not just color copies from a basement printer.

I listed one last night on eBay and put reprint in the title, but in the Item Specifics I put Original, because it is a 2010 original card.

Maybe I should change the Item Specifics to Reprint also???

EDIT: I think if you list it as 2010 in the title and description, the "reprint" part should be fairly obvious.

Any of these cards for sale should either say "2010 Topps" or "reprint" or both. image
