I'm in a head-to-head league which scoring cats of R, HR, RBI, SB, AVG and OBP and W, SV, K, ERA, WHIP and QS.

I've been offered 1B Joey Votto and one of the following SP: Porcello, Wells or Correia for Clayton Kershaw and Big Papi.

Would you take that deal? And if so, which of those 3 SP would you take?

Thanks in advance!

  • I wouldn't take it. Papi SHOULD rebound from last year and put up his usual .300/30/100 season (or close to it), especially if the second-half rebound he made last year is any indication.

Kershaw somehow had an 8-8 record with an ERA under 3.00 last year. Expect his wins to go up a lot I would say. The guy is amazing.

Long story short, I think Papi is the better 1B choice and Kershaw is the best pitcher out of all of them, so I wouldn't do it.

  • Keep Papi and Kershaw.

Votto worries me. Awesome talent, but he battled anxiety and depression along with dizziness from an ear infection last year. Otherwise, I would do the trade and take Porcello as the pitcher.

Thanks, fellas...any other opinions on Big Papi? Is he washed up? Or ready for a bounce back year? What do the Sox fans think?

Tough call without knowing what the rest of your roster looks like, but I would lean towards making the deal with Porcello. I think the floor for Votto is Papi's ceiling this year. I just can't see Papi doing much better than .275/30/100. Votto will do at least that, especially in that ballpark the Reds play in....Kershaw will probably have a better season than Porcello, but if the rest of your staff is good, you can probably live with a slight downgrade there for the offensive upgrade.

    I agree with jdip9.

I think Papi is going to see frequent days off this year due to the logjam at DH - especially when the team is facing lefties. They don't want Martinez to catch every game but they want his bat in the lineup. That means he'll either DH in place of Ortiz or he'll play 1B. The ripple effect means Youkilis will either DH or play 3B and I don't know if they'll want to take Beltre out of the field to make that happen.

I do have a mancrush on Votto this year. I may be wrong, but the anxiety and depression issue had to do with his father's death didn't it? If I'm right about that, it's not something he'll have to deal with again.
