Opinions on purchase: First venture into vintage

I have really been interested in vintage, thanks in large part to the 2010 Topps promotion of "giving away" cards from all years of their sets. I got quite a few 1956 Topps cards through he promotion and continue to trade with others for more of them. I have about 130 of them so far, so a little over 1/3 of the set is done. I bought 17 more over this past weekend and wanted to get some feedback on them. Namely, I am interested in how I did in terms of the prices paid. This will greatly help me as I continue to look for and purchase the rest of the cards. Please see the pictures below and let me know your thoughts! Thank you! Bill

#1 - Harridge $20, #25 Kluzewski $18, 5 commons and 1 semistar for $18, Bruton $7. The rest I don't remember the individual prices but they were like $3-4 each. Total for all 17 cards amounted to $80.00.

A little high in my opinion, but nice cards.

BTW, do you have the Topps promotion cards in hand yet? If so what kind of shape are they in?

Cool Cards. Is it wrong to like the Brady Bunch one the most?
  • Yeah me too, I like the Brady Bunch card... image
  • Nice start Bill. I think you may want to consider what's more important, centering or corners. It looks like you have a mid-range set going (5-6s) with some 7's in there. So if you lean toward centering you can have a few corners a little softer. JMO. Doug

Be careful in paying too much money for lower condition #1 cards of any vintage set. They are very valuable in high grade because they were normally on top of the kid's baseball card pile, and hence suffered the most wear and took the worst of it with rubber band indentations, etc. They may "appear" rare when seeing a price guide in high grade, but in lower grade they really should be worth as much as any common, if the #1 card happens to be a common. But even the value of a #1 star card can be misleading based on the price guide for the same reason.

Sometimes some Hall of Fame players are not really in that big of a demand considering they are in the Hall of Fame. Sometimes a tough short print common can be worth more than a Hall of Fame player, depending on the set. I think the best way to learn value is following a number of ebay auctions for a time and getting a "feel" for what the cards are worth.

Best of luck in completing the rest of the set.

    What's Bobby's problem?

He just read the clause in the contract that laid out the "No Sleeping With Your Co-Stars", although most of them broke that Ban after the show ended.

  • Thanks for the feedback and the tips! I'm glad you all like the Brady Bunch card! It's one of my favorites. I have two little kids and one day, about a month ago, they asked me about the card and what it was. So I brought the laptop over, punched in brady bunch on youtube and we started watching it. They LOVE it. Every friggin day now they ask if we can watch an episode of the brady bunch before bed LOL. They run around pretending to be Bobby or Cousin Oliver. It's a riot. My 4 year old said that he wanted us to get him some brady bunch stickers. I was like sorry bud, but those don't exist. image

So was $20 too much for the condition of that Harridge? I thought it seemed about right price wise. Someone else said that the price seemed about right on the lot overall. Someone else mentioned it was a little high overall. What else should I keep in mind when looking for these as far as price is concerned? I figured a mid grade set is what I would go for - no creases, no writing on the cards and no surface scratches/damage. Some light wear on the corners for the most part and I realize my "star" cards may have to be in the PSA 5 range in order for me to afford them. What sort of prices should I expect to pay for commons, semis and stars in the mid-grade range that are RAW?

Also, is there a premium difference on white vs. gray backs and which ones should have the premium if so?

Thanks again to all of you for the feedback!

I did not take the 56s out, however I got a 52 Wehmeier - it was hammered. heavy creases - yuck! I also got a 53 Thompson in hand. That one was better, but it's still mid grade. I did post picks of the cards in the Topps million thread. You can check them out there.
