It happens about twice a month on these boards...just when I start to think my little coin collection might have some small bit of significance, someone (e.g., "Simpson") comes along and stomps all over my EGO!!!
This is the very simpson that Purchased the Sunnywood set and then upgraded 2 of the CC's with the Sonnier Set toners that were purcahsed by Legend from GSAGUY.
One of the first group of coins graded by PCGS under their new service. Each coin was graded by a team of graders at either Legends office or at the recent show in Texas. I forget that part of the story. It was a little private grading party.
Simpson bought much (maybe all?) of the "Law Collection" -- so where the Law Collection was king, just insert Simpson in there and you have much of the story. Simpson obviously bought more than the Law Collection.
I've seen the capped bust half dimes and those "+ grades" were certainly warranted on some of those coins. Too bad there are no images.
Laura builds some incredible sets, and I suppose that if I had all the money in the world, and told her to build me the best sets possible, that I'd have stuff awfully like that. I think that this takes more than just money, but money sure does help.

Yeah you gotta give her credit as she builds them like a bull running in the streets Pamplona!
To Err Is Human.... To Collect Err's Is Just Too Much Darn Tootin Fun!
The coins are impressive but the collection is not. Having someone build a collection for you takes the fun out of it IMO. Kind of like having the ability to date top models but having your lackey go out on the date

Do you think the guy has taken the time to look at what he's bought or actually has the coins in hand or doing the upgradings or adding the coins to his registry? There's no way someone buys 10 million worth of coins, drives them home and looks at this stuff. He might have them secured and delivered or they're in some kind of holdings where someone else is managing them. IMO, a window shopper! Investor.
But if the guy is toting his coins home and gloating over them, doing the upgradings and registry work then he's my kind of collector! But with the kind of stuff he's buying, I don't think that's even remotely possible.

<< <i>Is this the same Simpson who purchased gsaguys 1890cc and 1891cc Morgans and the Sunnywood set ? >>
Yes... Also the same Simpson that purchased $10M worth of US Patterns from Legend a few years ago. >>
I believe that Legend subsequently brokered a deal in which Simpson purchased a ca. $30M pattern collection, making Simpson's pattern collection the largest in private hands.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Laura had a BIG HAND in assembling these sets !!!
I know I was very surprised to see the Blay Barber Dime set dethroned.

I'm thinking this was planned with a dealer and PCGS and kept under wraps... which makes it all the more amazing....

I really didn't think that kind of collecting happened in "modern" times.
