I wonder? next step? great responses

Dear all

The responses are sobering and interesting to the topic "I wonder" - I request a new thread that is a pro-active one based on ideas u have, what could we do to bring our hobby to the schools of our respective countries were are young potential collectors of the future are all together?

We are taught about money when we are very young and it remains with us on one way or another through our lives, even though today more and more in the form of plastic.

If fact money is a common denominator to everyone, the interest could be stimulated, just be organizing a “touch table” at a local school were we could let the children see several coins on a tray from Greek to say 19th Century – handle them, ask questions?

When all said and done coinage is our history, for a young person to handle a Sestertius of Hadrian, a stator of Alexander the Great what stories we will have to tell them.

Maybe we can assist to bring new young collectors to our great hobby?

I've learned from my own kids that you just have to let them follow their own interests. They may not be interested right now, but a day will come as they mature that they will look at things differently. I know that I had no interest in history for the longest time, but have recently started taking great interest.

All we can do is to show them that there are interesting things out there that they may be missing. I show my collection to the kids and to friends, but I get the feeling that they just humor me by looking and that they really couldn't care less. I show them anyway.image

Well, with the cooperation of teachers who are numismatically minded (or at least receptive to learning some numismatic basics), one could donate coins to be used in the classroom. I have often thought if I was a teacher of say, middle school or high school World History, I would assign a paper about a particular country or period in history or monarch, and let the students pick from a set list of topics. The best paper on each topic would win the student a nice coin of that particular country, period, or monarch.

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.
