1974 Topps PSA 9 #599 small print mistake on flip question?

Are my eyes playing tricks on me here? There is a 1974 Topps PSA 9 #599 Rookies card on ebay right now (item #120550769427) with the flip stating it is small print. However, it appears to be a large print as the San Diego is larger than the other team designations. Is this, in fact, a mistake on the flip? If it is a mistake, should it be reported to ebay, I could not find the link to report a mistaken advertisement. As of a couple weeks ago, there was a pop 1, and I can see somebody being taken for huge $$$ here. Anybody else see what I'm seeing?

Ebay pic, next to itzagoner's pic, they are both the large print variety:
Looking at the set registry (can't copy pics), the "S" in San starts between the "A" & "V" in Dave and the "S" in Padres ends under the "B" in his last name. These are both difinitively Large print cards. Good going by PSA to mis-identify another far from rare card....

As far as reporting it, go to the item page on ebay, there should be a clickable box to "report this item" on the page. Right hand side of the page, under other item info, just to the right of the bidding section.

Bidding already at $100 with 5 days left
Labeled correctly, this would be a $10 card

    Here's a real small-print.

The Large print version sells for about $100 in PSA 9, where the Small print version goes for about $300 in PSA 8. A PSA 9 would bring $750+ IMO.

Guess you gotta know what your buying, don't trust the flip.

Why bother reporting it to Ebay? They won't be able to figure out what the problem is and won't do anything. How about letting the seller know the card is mislabeled and maybe just maybe he will be as concerned about the problem as you are and end the auction.

thanks mlbfan, that's what i was hoping to see....thought i had a raw copy, but i can't find it right now.

btw, i sent a eBay message to somersetvelvet to notify him of the error....not sure he knows.

he WAS here about a year ago to fend off the slings and arrows in this thread:

I've sorted through many 74 sets without even checking on this version. I'll have to look closer at what I've got
$100 for even a pop. 27 large print

I actually know Frank Riccelli. I work for a Mack Truck dealership and he owns a couple of dump trucks and runs out of Syracuse.

  • I think I saw him at the Chicago show in November during dealer set up actually running around asking dealers for any and all 64 Floods. Some of the old time dealers kinda gave him a "strange" look. Gotta give him credit though, he had a decent lookin chick draped on his arm if its the same dude.

    Pop 3 now.

Bob, your card should be a POP 2, and realistically you have the most to gain if the mistaken #3 is corrected.

ttt'n this one to keep it fresh, as i have now attempted to contact this seller twice through eBay messaging without a reply.....i'd find it hard to believe that he hasn't been made aware of my messages, since he listed quite a few new auctions yesterday.

here's a link to the auction in case anyone is interested, but don't waste your money.

    WRONG!!

perhaps SV would like to come by and explain himself like he did a year ago. image

As soon as the winning bidder leaves feedback we need to contact him to let him know.
  • MULLINS5MULLINS5 Posts: 4,517 ✭✭✭
...maybe direct the winning bidder here to see we tried telling the seller about the card.

Here is my message and his quick reply"

    "Dear somersetvelvet,

Is this the large print? It looks like the large print variation, can you please let me know? I've been looking for this card to add to my set for a long time and would like to bid.

    Thank you,

    Patrick"

    "
I don't know. I just got it back from being graded at PSA and they graded/labeled it a Small Print Variation.

got a reply from my 2 messages, and each was the exact same response....since i respect the privacy of the person in question, i would not share the contents of said messaging, but let's just say the attitude appears to be: If PSA says, that's what it is.

perhaps he should take note of this little blurb which accompanies each eBay auction......

Seller assumes all responsibility for this listing.

man, i'm irritated. time to drink.

i have been watching many of his auctions.

knowing this small print large print deal , would you bid on any of his other auctions ?
looks like he has some nice cards up for auction. it is hard to buy from someone who will basically steal from someone, after they have been told the real deal on this card.
my thoughts are i will pass on his auctions and wait the next available card/ cards i need...

any other thoughts on this ?

  • What really needs to happen is someone here needs to win the card and when it is time to pay....tell him that it is not the correct card with the correct label so therefore you are canceling the sale. I think there are enough board members here to keep winning the card until he corrects the situation.

Here's the message I just sent the seller:

    -----------------------------------------------
    Hi,

The card you show in your auction is not a small print variation. It's a large print variation. It's been mislabeled by PSA. Here's a scan of an actual small print #599.

    http://www.bobsbbcards.com/images/baseball/1974/1974topps/74Topps599cRookiePitchers.jpg

Note that the size of the font for "San Diego Padres" matches the font size for the other team names. On yours, the font size for "San Diego Padres" is larger. I hope this helps.

    Bob
    -----------------------------------------------

I'm going to also send an email to someone at PSA (B.J. or Cosetta probably) pointing out the auction to them. They should be able to fix the database to reflect that that cert. number is a large print variation.

I sent one telling him he could get screwed via NAD and his recent response --

You are correct, I have ended the auction and will send the card to PSA for review. Thanks

Good to see he owned up to it. I wonder if he saw this thread, IIRC he has visited this site before.
