Anybody know what this is?

"Unknown Bird Token"

The reverse looks Conder-ish, but of course with it's being 20 mm and mostly uninscribed, it wouldn't be a Conder. Looks to be late 18th/early 19th century in style, though.

I just thought it was neat. I'm not bidding or anything, so if one of you wants to have a go at it, bid away.

Might be a "snipe" heller of Isenburg. Don't have my Krause handy. Struck during the 19th century.

Yep, that's it! I was thinking Isny for some dumb reason... but Isenburg is it. There are a few listed here, Schnepfenheller = snipe heller

So you're saying I sent you off on a snipe hunt by posting this thread? That's great! image

Hmm... "Schnepfenheller" has a nice ring to it. I hadn't seen them before. I rather like them.

  • interesting-- is it farthing size or halfpenny size?

I believe they're roughly 18mm, but don't quote me on that. So about farthing size. Just looked 'em up in the German Coins Krause and they actually are listed there as medallic issues.
