Has there ever been a common coin (Lightside or Darkside) that you just can't find?

MadMartyMadMarty Posts: 16,697 ✭✭✭
I'm not talking about the 55DDO in MS68 type coin, I mean a common coin that you just can't find!!

My white whale is a 1994 Cook Islands $1 proof (or proof set). Karuse says they were minted, but in 15 years of looking I have never seen one for sale anywhere!
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

Well sort of. I can't seem to find a barber quarter, half or standing quarter with an Anacs photo certificate. I've even seen flowing hair halves and dollars.
Need a Barber Half with ANACS photo certificate. If you have one for sale please PM me. Current Ebay auctions

Nope, can't say that's ever happened. Only when looking for a specific grade or holder.

Not a "common" coin. But there's an R10 Piece of coal scrip I'd give a kidney for (not really). But I'd pay good for it.

1954-S/D Jefferson nickel. This is supposed to be a relatively common coin, but I've never found one, after years of looking, and have only ever seen one in-hand.

I've gotten a few calls from people who claim to have a 1943 silver wheat cent , yet the only thing I find is a common misperception.

There are two US coins that I've been looking for for nostalgic reasons. One is a 1916 Walker, the other a 1921 Peace Dollar. Although I've seen hundreds of the 16 in unc and probably thousands of the 21, I am a tough customer. I have yet to find ones that I want to buy and keep.

There have been a couple. When building a Morgan year set (one from each year), the 1921 and 1897 were tougher to find than the price guides or mintages suggested. Of course, after I bought, I found them everywhere.

These days, I have been looking for an 1892 Liberty Nickel, which is a relatively common date. However, fewer come up for sale in the grade I am looking for than the much rarer key dates.

I think it depends on the size of the circle you travel.
My circle is small. It took me quite a while to find a reeded edge CBH.
I'm sure others are just rolling in them.

I have not been at this long enough to fill holes, but I have been collecting modern circulation coins from rolls. It's surprising how tough some dates are to find. Since 2008 I have only found one 1978 D dime, and not a single 1972 D has been found. They have long been the only clad era dimes I need to complete my collection.

I have not seen any nickels from 1955, 62, 68 or 69. The coins from years around them are fairly plentifull.

2008-2010 nickels are non-existant here, as are 2009 or 2010 dimes. I don't even know if they have issued the 2010s yet of those two.

I suppose I could buy all these if I wanted to, but my goal is to find them at face value, and save my money to only buy things I can't find in rolls. For example I'm not going to find Barbers in rolls, or world coins (usually)

For world coins, I have been looking for an African coin that has monkeys playing instruments. I can't remember if it's Kenya or Nigeria off the top of my head, but I saw it in Krause. It's a current, circulating issue, yet I can't find one. I think the problem may be that it's such a low "value" coin, I think less then a dollar in UNC, that nobody wants to take the time to list it for sale anywhere.

They're out there. I discovered I had one in my collection many years after finding it in circulation as a child. If I recall correctly, it's about VG, though. Not very desirable. I'll have to dig it out of my brother's safe and assess it's condition.

I look every where I can for trade dollars(like cir 75 s/cc's) and you can go a long time without seeing specific dates and combos let alone in nice grade in PCGS plastic. A lot of the coins in my set are simply the first one I ever saw that I could afford, looks came a distant second to availability.

There are lots and lots of others but these are some I've worked harder in finding. Try
finding some of the modern Fijian coinage in any condition. There are lots of moderns

My 2007 version of Krause lists the Cook Islands 1994 proof dollar at 200 pieces minted. Value listed is only $6.

Not exactly common compared to the other years when they minted many thousands.

If I come across one I'll try to snag it at $6.

It took me 6-7 years to find an 1883 N/C liberty nickel that was acceptable... I looked in grades from MS-63 to 66.
Want to buy an auction catalog for the William Hesslein Sale (December 2, 1926). Thanks to all those who have helped us obtain the others!!!
