I want a photoseal + * CAC on all my coins!

I will only buy coins with all the bells and whistles on one holder. This is what it has come to.

How sad. I just want to buy nice coins with out the BS. Anyone else here feel this way?

Since a * is NGC and a + is PCGS I don't think you can get everything on one coin image

However if you try hard I think you can get (3) of the (4) image

Pretty soon, all these signs are going to represent swear words.

    + * & $ = image
  • All seems pretty silly to me.

Is a MS63+ CAC more desirable than a average MS64 now?

It doesn't bother me right now that most of my coins don't have ANY of those stickers and symbols. However, I suspect it will bother me in the future when it comes time to sell and a dealer says, "Well, it's not 'symbolized' in any way." image

Dealers are always going to find fault with any coin you try to sell them. Whether they have plus signs or CAC stickers or Photo Seals.

I think there is going to be a + designation ATS also.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

Collectors are by nature obsessive/compulsive. they like to set rules for their own behavoir. So it feels good to say "All my coins are CAC approved" or "All my coins are +" coins.

But both are just an opinion on where a coin falls into the continuum of grades. So a high end 66+CAC is just worse that a low end 67. Assuming the low end 67 has no significant eye appeal issues, it is the better coin. But the rules might forbid you from buying it.

Of course if the 67 is 2X the price of a 66+ then maybe the 66+ is the way to go. But if the 66+ is not much less than the 67, you should logicly ignore your rules and buy it.

But if you don't enjoy this, if you enjoy your compulsive behavoir of buying only CAC or + coins, the go for it.

Remember,we are all here for the fun of it.

The reason why this sort of “attraction” to these “better” coins with now various connotations occur is that coin collecting for some is like a tinkle contest. It’s just one more way to say your coin is better than mine.

  • I would think that the + designation and a CAC are redundant because + and CAC both signify top of a grade but just shy of the higher grade. So one would think they should be interchangeable and not put on both now I have seen NGC * CAC but this is different because the CAC is top of the grade and * means something extra or extreme eye appeal

Actually, it is conceivable that one can have an NGC MS65 + * CAC coin.
  • In the end the grade may just be an after thought.

I think this is similar to what happened with baseball cards.

Whats next.............slab with a small insert with thread from director of mints jacket or pedigee holders cotton coin glove??

You read my mind. This seems very similar to what happened to baseball cards. The marketplace for baseball cards tanked when all the stupid "gold" and "silver" and misc. autographed, and randomly inserted crap began to dilute the hobby. It was just too much.

If you have the PCGS Protection PLUS a +,
then you do not need anything else. You
will have the best bell and whistle available
other then perhaps one of the rare GOLD BEANS.

The only way to avoid this is to stand tall and not become mindless drones....

    Oh well...

    It was a thought.

That may be true today, but when the
new service comes out with the razzle dazzle symbol in the upper left corner
which of course is competing with the other company's little 4 leaf clover in the lower
right hand corner which you already paid more money to get.....
will you pony up the $ XYZ and get that designation also?
