So I finally decided to do it...

I'm going through my collection and making an inventory of what I have and what I paid. Yes, I know - I should have done this from the beginning. I've just decided to do it now to save myself a bigger headache in the future. At least the collection has only been built for about a little over a year now so it could be worse. But, I just spent over an hour going through/pricing rolls and I'm still not done looking through them. I have a feeling this is going to take a lot longer than I expected. Anyone have some extra Excedrin they can toss me? imageimage

Good luck - it is worth it to be organized. I let it you for 4 years before I decided to get organize and list everything in a spreadsheet. It took a long, long time to get it organized and I still didn't find everything.

Glad I only have about 30 coins in my collection. Much easier to do this task.

    Good luck.

First started the listing back in the 1980's.

And spent most this morning just listing the changes from this weekend.

I've been doing that for my collection since day one. I keep track of what it is, the day I got it and where I got it from. I don't keep track of the price I paid, or what anyone says it is "worth" because that does not matter to me. I also don't keep track of grade, I just keep track of what I wish to upgrade. image

I also keep a pie chart with denomination. Except all proofs are togther.

Photographing, and/or a video of the coins is another good idea. Especially, if the collection is worth enough for insurance to make sense. Video can be quicker for those that don't want to spend a lot of time. It may not be ideal, but any documentation is going to better than no documentation, if the sad day does come when a claim is necessary and/or a police report has to be filled out.

I did this a few years ago and although it was a lot of work it was actually very rewarding. And since then it is little trouble to keep up.

95% of all my coins are in PCGS slabs so I used their "inventory" to record purchase date and price, seller, date, grade, variety. And good photos of each coin. I've started adding comments but I'm way behind there.

You won't be sorry you spent the time. And I'll bet you learn a lot along the way.

Methinks your collection is about to get a little bit bigger

So far it is very rewarding. Had to take a break and help my buddy out with some computer stuff but I hope to at least have 75% of it done by bedtime or else I'm not going to have a place to sleep tonight - bad idea to spread it all out on the bed image

ocon, I actually enjoy the rain so that would make it a lot better image

Edit to add: As for what I'm actually inventorying is the item and what I paid for it along with any special packaging (ie: sealed box, obw, etc.) This way if god forbid something happens to me at least the family members who get my collection know what I've paid for it and know it was or is at least worth that amount just to give them a ball park figure. The video or pictures I don't think would be too necessary at this time but I will keep it in mind as the collection grows.

I just picked up the 5th Edition of Unsual World Coins, so I'm thinking I've got to get to work properly ordering my collection with the corresponding "X" numbers.
