I believe this 'look' is due to something that occured on the die itself, like polishing to remove die clashes, or for some other reason.
I've seen it before on 43's, as well as many other dates.

I was actually referring to the area on the right of the right wheat stalk, and not the area above it. Fred is correct with what is above the right wheat stalk, and that is not a retained cud
