How do you guys build raw vintage sets from scratch?

Just wondering as I start out on building a few raw vintage sets (67, 73, 75mini) in ex-mt or nr-mint condition....my thought is to pick up a few different lots or sets via ebay, or other connections and cherry pick to get to the condition I want, then dump the leftovers on ebay. It takes a little up-front capital, but on the back end some of it comes back via ebay sales. Its tough to find good raw cards on ebay, but I figure a few hits and misses are ok in the end. Once I get to needing less than 50-100 cards, then maybe its pick them up one by one time.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

    thanks for the tip.

I should add, that I enjoy the thrill of building the set versus just buying a completed set....so lots are my preference.

Back in the early/mid 80s I put together a '67 set set card by card by going to shows EVERY Saturday and Sunday. Took me a long time to do it but I had a lot of fun doing it.

I probably have some 67 commons around if you are interested. LMK. GOOD LUCK!

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
  • From a $ standpoint, the 73 and 75 should be just bought outright. The '67 you should buy a partial set (50%-75%) and fill in the missing high numbers, stars, etc. piece by piece

The most fun I have building sets is buying lots and partial sets. That way you can put the best commons in your set. I usually have to go to trusted sources for raw stars or buy them graded. You also learn a lot about the sets you are building that way. I am currently working on '58, '61 and '67 baseball sets.
Collector of 1976 Topps baseball for some stupid reason.
Collector of Pittsburgh Pirates cards for a slightly less stupid reason.

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

Thats probably the best way to go, at least in terms of having fun building the set. Start with lots first and then look for singles. If your looking for '73's I have a good amount. Good luck!
