Yeah I could NOT let this get away. the last AU no problem one that sold was fifteen years ago! It seems like a "no excuses needed" type of a coin, a solid keystone for a collection. It IS a major hurdle cleared...this was the one I thought would be the TRUE stopper. only 400 minted, maybe 45 or survivors....and half them are MS so the coin is just never offered. This was in an elderly mans long term collection...which hes selling off.
cant wait to get it in hand and let my camera have a go at it! He tells me its fully "longacre doubled"
Id say the moral of the story is if ya see the major key to the series, something hardly ever for sale..... in a grade and look you like...and can find some way to get your hands on it....GO FOR IT!
Very tough if not impossible to find this coin in no problem circulated condition. Heritage lists zero TPG circulated coins going back 15 years! A few problem circs but most are higher grade, much more expensive coins. Looks like it will match the rest of your nice AU coins from the 70's!
Thanks Liefgold ...opportunites need to be taken advantage of at times.
I cant wait to see this in hand and compare the quality of the strike/ wreath impression /hair detail and shelf doubling. I think this issue was aimed at coin collectors of the day and struck with a but more TLC...with prooflike quality and super strong strike.

Unless you are planning on selling it sometime soon, and as long as the slab isn't scratched too badly, why bother (unless you're worried about theft protection). After all, let's be realistic, let's say you hold on to that for 7 years... how much do you want to bet that within 7 years there will be a whole new slab?
Oh Man.....................you need to drink more of the Kool Aid~
Yes...I do have a Gold Dollar registry set and yes, I do want to get as many points as I can possibly get. That and the fact if it would grade 58+ the value would jump substantially... And this is a TROPHY in every sense of the word. I want it in one of the brand new holders with the pretty little shield on it. And I the color green and shaped like a bean is really nice with well toned gold and I think it would be a splendid christmas ornament on the little plastic tree.
Ive looked at a lot of these, and this one looks to be something special. it seems to look as if its a higher relief......just looks different from the rest Ive got. maybe this small run, only 400 was actually done in the medal room on the proof press? Its long been suspected that the 1875 production was done for the benefit of the numismatists, rather than circulation.
Hmmmm Maybe I gotta get the tru View Too, eh? why not?
ambro51, your pursuit of the gold dollars has been really fun to witness, and congrats to you on this one! I also agree, with a "super special" piece like this, why not go for all the possible trimmings as far as certification -- secure plus, green bean, too bad they don't still do the regency slab! Great coin and images.
I had to come back for another look, WOW!! Ambro that is one hell of a nice coin.....WAY NICE!! I would say the super deluxe model, and a very nice addition for your collection

Before someone else grabs it and says, GOT IT!!!!!
Sometime's in life you have to go for the things you want, even if you have to splurge a little, JMHO.
these coins always look prooflike, and photograph with difficulty. joined wreath tops
Definitely a wise choice as the odds of another coming along are slim, at best.

Wow! Congrats to you, big time!!! Nice pick up!
Is it the AU55 coin from the Coinfacts photo? The obverse looks like it, trying to decide about the reverse, or is it just my imagination?

I might also want to get that coin off to JA for a look. That obverse toning, so perfect really highlights the design for such eye appeal.

Again, if you are going to hold on to it, why bother? Or are you looking for Registry points for it?
EDITED TO ADD: In any case, it is a pretty coin.
