Musings about new Shield Plus

I find the application of laser surface scanning technology to coin surfaces in the manner described by David Hall and Don Willis to be absolutely fascinating. Being a curious scientist, I wonder if there are some characteristics that these scans provide that show any trends that correlate with technical grades. In other words, there may be a certain part of the data generated by the process that is common among coins in a certain grade.

That being said, and knowing each coin has its own individual characteristics such as strike, luster, marks, and toning, the laser scanning may well be totally independent of grade. I suspect there is so much data generated by these scans that there is a wealth of information that could be mined from it.

Also, how many sides of a coin are scanned? Obverse, reverse, edge?

I'm not sure if the new process 'reads' luster, marks and/or toning.

In the video, PCGS states that they have run many tests on coins and have first laser read them once, then they have taken that coin and purposely, scratched them, marked them and toned them and the coin, upon a second laser testing, has come out a perfect match.

So based on this, I can't see how this new method can add any important information regarding the grade of a coin.
