Coin collecting..

What has it become..??..as star for this..a bean for that ..a special label in a holder for what we consider a collectable.A collectable that someone else's opinion is valued more than our own...!!!..Geese...!!!..I thought I was the collector and saw the thing of value or object to looked at with awe and inspiration. Now it is whittled down to a common disc of metal with a label in coffin to be viewed occasionally with an process that someone sees fit to put their mark upon and I am beholden to agree....What a hobby.....!!!!!

They've become commodities more than unique collectibles.

    << <i>Coin collecting.. >>

Wrong forum?image As much as some people like to complain about the grading companies (and dealers) being in it for the money, understandably, to a large extent, it is about the money for many collectors, as well. Otherwise, they wouldn't worry so much about all of these things other than the COINS.

  • Only if you buy in to this type of collecting. They are still the same coins, they're just being marketed to you differently. You can keep it simple if you so choose, or buy into all of the hype and marketing. It's still your call.image

....the problem is there are many many collectors/dealers that would rather deal with a slabbed coin thinking

they would be easier to sell. jmo. image

I think I will just sit back and enjoy MY COINS, regardless of which of the two certification companies slabbed them, who put a bean, star, or a plus on it, or whatever. I am sure there are advantages to all that "extras," but in the end, I prefer my coins to the extras. When it comes to maximizing value at time of sale, perhaps then it will be important. Until then, I will just enjoy the essence of numismatics.

PQ coins are better coins... just because one likes PQ doesn't mean it is only about the money. However, the value of the coins is tied to the quality and quality is what people want.... and money.... lots of money... like $1000 for guessing "hiring chinese counterfeiters"... but it doesn't mean it's only about money. "nice coin in that grade" is heard from people commenting on another's coin.... are the commenters only thinking about money?
