1933 Goudey Babe Ruth #144 - Legit?

I'm looking at two Ruth's and wanted to get people's feedback if they think these cards are ligit -- both being sold by users with < 1,000 feedbacks.

I am more concerned about this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280483267647&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123

The seller only has 183 feedbacks, none that I can see for selling cards and this is his ONLY card for sale right now! I asked where he got the card, why he is selling it, etc. and his answer was, "I bought the card from a dealer about 11 years ago. I think he was in New York or New Jersey."

This one seems more ligit, but curious if anyone has a concern:

Thank you in advance!!

Look good to me, but I didn't spend much time looking.

They look good to me. Although all the stories I hear about fake PSA graded cards is enough to make me leave the hobby. It is sad to think that you have to be very careful buying raw cards because of all the dishonest people but now that you have to be carefull buying graded cards is enough to ruin the hobby for all of us.

They both look legit to me. I like the look of the 5 better than the 6. Maybe it's the scan. People leave so much money on the the table with their crappy pictures.

Both look legit. The PSA 5 looks better to me as far as "eye appeal". Just looks like a nicer card.

I agree that both look good, but I do definitely like the PSA 5 better.

    As far as posting links:

    1. Go to your browser bar (http://...............), right-click and copy the webpage you want to link to
    2. At the top of the CU Forum block where you are typing your post, you'll see a button (5th from the left) marked "http".....click on it
    3. In the pop-up window, right-click, paste and hit OK
    4. Now in the same pop-up window, it will ask you to type a short label for your link.....do it
    5. Hit OK
    6. The link will now appear in your post you are typing. Once you are finished, hit reply and you're done

  • I like the PSA 5 better than the 6. I am not really up on the 33 Goudey , but is it normal for the name to bleed through to the back of the card on the Babe Ruth, I never have owned a 33 Ruth but the few 33 goudeys I used to own, I don't remember the Names of the player bleeding through to the back? just curious.

Good point. I noticed both the 5 and 6 bleed through. I don't know the answer. anyone else??

In my book, that is the quintessential baseball card. The best player in an all-time set with a perfect baseball pose. It's probably #1 on my "maybe someday" list.

Good luck, and be sure to share a big, clear scan when you get one in hand!

    Regarding the "bleeding".....

This is actually caused during the printing of the cards. The sheets were stacked on top of each other while the ink was still wet. Therefore, some of the ink from the front of a card would transfer to the back of the card above it. This is actually pretty common on Goudeys, as well as on T206s.

Please dont call it Bleed Through image, it is no such thing, it is a wet sheet transfer..... stacked wet sheets. the back flip ghost image is from the sheet directly below it in the stack.

****edited to say, Sorry Steve I see now that you explained it..... I usually only scan the responces and read them after image ****

Both cards are obviously authentic (as in not reprints, but the Craigslist fakes thing I usually dont research as much). No Red Flags at all IMO. One is a flat auction the other has a reserve. I personally rarely bid on reserve auctions. I sometimes throw a low bid out there to see if I can top the reserve (see if its low), otherwise I move on.

The #144 is 2X more common that any other card in the R319 set, but it is the most attractive of the 4 Ruths in the set IMO. Its very common (thousands are out there), take that into consideration before you take out a loan to pay for the card if you win image

Anyone notice that it's going to cost "$19.95" to ship this Babe flat rate? It better be packaged quite spectacularly!

Thats cheap. For a psa 5 or 6 it will probably be more around $25 to ship with insurance.
