BST - what is the right way to handle something.

If a buyer PM's you about a coin expressing interest in buying it but does not respond to your answer nor agree to buy the coin, what is a fair amount of time to wait before selling it to a new buyer who want to pay the asking price?
I seldom check PM's but do check emails often jason@seated.org

until the end of the next day. Many people come here just once a day...while others live here

Under the circumstances as presented, you have no obligation to hold the coin for him for any length of time. Still, it would be nice/polite to let him know that since you have not heard back from him, and a third party has also expressed interest at your stated asking price, you plan to proceed.

Edited to add: It would have been much better if, when you replied to the first interested party, you had indicated you would (or would not) give him a set period of time to get back to you.

it depends... if buyer 1 seems to be willing to pay full price and just has a simple question about it, then maybe i'd wait a bit since they are first but I'd be sure to tell buyer 2 to hang on for a day or so if possible in case it falls through.

however, if buyer 2 is willing to pay full price now and buyer 1 is negotiating or on the fence about it, it's going to be buyer 2's coin right now, unless you indicated a willness to cut your price with buyer 1... in that case i'd see if buyer 1 would at least match buyer 2's offer.

selling coins is too hard, i'm just going to keep buying instead image

? It would also be nice to get replies if offers were declined or item was sold to some one else.

Never give the illusion of an open ended deal to anyone. Wether you're buying or selling. Plain and simple. EOM

I know I would get back to the seller ASAP but I think Barndog said it best, end of the next day.

How long did the potential buyer take after your posting on the BST ? Was your ad there a week or two minutes ? There are a few variables that could sway the way I would address the situation.

Depending on the circumstances of the deal, it can be whatever one determines to be a fair amount of time for a commitment. If I determine that the item is sufficiently in demand, I expect the time frame to be shorter, to prevent either a buyer from price comparison shopping or a seller from leveraging my offer.

I agree with Barndog coupled with the added communication that Mr. Feld suggested.

  • I usually give it 24 hours, and notify the second party who was interested about the situation. I tell them if X person doesn't respond in 24 hours then the item will be sold to you. 99% of the time the second party interested is ok with that. It is first come first serve - but at the same time like others said some people don't check this forum multiple times daily (like myself image) so I at least give the first inquiry a chance. If they don't check back within 24 hours then they really didn't want it that much in the first place IMO.

I would want to serve an actual customer, and would have second thoughts about a potential customer if they did not respond within a business day.

It really depends on the nature of the first party's message. If he stated that he wanted to buy the coin, I would follow Barndog's lead. If he made a general inquiry, I would move on to the real buyer.

When I am engaged in an Internet-based coin transaction, either here or by email, I try to be even more obsessive about checking email and PM than usual. If not, I give a phone number where I can be reached.

24 hours is plenty of time for a would-be buyer to respond. If they haven't in that amount of time, IMHO you are under no further obligation.

Unless the inquirer specifically requests to have the coin(s) held for them for a specific amount of time, everything would still be totally available for sale to the first party that confirms a transaction.

I was thinking this way too, the first person that buys it get's it unless you promised to hold it based on the message.
If a buyer asked if he needs to buy the coin because he asked a question the day before everyone would say no. Sounds like there was no deal to hold it or buy it. That's my thought without seeing the emails image

Whenever I have bought something on the BST I say either "I'll take it if it's available" or I say "I'll take it for $X, if that works, let me know how you would like payment".

Buyer sends a clear message he/she will take it at the going price AND sends a follow-up message CONFIRMING deal with funds on it's way, within 24 hrs.........If not, sell to next interested forum member. Had several no pays,so I keep the timing short, unless it's members I've had positive dealings in past.

In addition to some of what has been stated, I also ask "what would I expect if I were in the other person's shoes...?"

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

While you say that, knowing you and others here, if you (or others) as a buyer made an offer to buy a coin on the BST, went for a haircut or doctor's appointment, came back an hour later and found the coin sold, there would be a thread on this forum complaining that so-and-so hosed me. No question about it.
