New Sports Card Investment Group

Hey everyone, there have been several threads on here regarding sports cards as an investment, and everyone seems to have their own personal opinion of cards as an investment vs. collecting for fun, etc. Well, some friends and I have started a new sports card "investment" club that hopefully combines both the "fun" and the "investment"! I have set up a blog to talk about the idea and our first meeting. Please feel free to let us know what you think!

Buffalo Sports Card Investment Group

Thanks,

  • This sounds like a fun endeavor, I'd tread carefully on these boards though. Requesting an opinion is great, requesting information from seasoned collectors is respectable, requesting new members(money) for your group, you may get tarred and feathered. In the end, we're a social group that's willing to help new/members collectors but some have a tendency to "protect" our hobby(which is ok). I think your group is good for the hobby as you are introducing new people to it. Here's my investment tip: 1952 Mickey Mantle image
  • Thanks for the words of wisdom...it was never my intention to request new members....we are purposely trying to keep the group small and "amongst friends" for the moment. I have been reading the board for quite a while (and collecting even longer), just have never been an active poster until recently.

    Hey Bob
Interesting idea. I look forward to seeing how it works out and if you are able to keep it going at a profit. One issue that I see arising is that in the collectibles world values are, of course, not set like they are in the stock market, where you have a definitive buy/sell price. Two equally graded cards can differentiate in sell price by as much as 100% depending on an infinite number of reasons. How will you take this into account when choosing your investments?

You may have to treat it more like I've seen investment groups for flipping houses do. Where you have a certain person/persons who are actively seeking out good buy opportunities. Not necessarily looking for certain cards but looking for good deals on flippable cards.
  • Great questions...the question of how to determine the value of our portfolio is really important when people look to leave the group, as we need to "pay out" their share. And like you mention, there is no value on a collectible until it is actually sold. I am going to post a blog post about how we deal with this in the near future as there are a lot of ramifications of this.

"Flipping" cards was discussed in our first meeting, and in our next meeting next week we are going to decide how we want to approach this - e.g. buy & hold long term, flip cards quickly, buy raw cards for grading, etc. I will let you know how that discussion goes!

  • Hasn't something like this been tried before? I seem to recall something similar.
  • If anybody has done something similar, I would be interested in chatting to see how it went - what worked well, what didn't, etc. As an FYI I just posted a new blog post that includes our by-laws and talks about how we determine ownership and the value of our portfolio.

One of the E-Topps related sites had something like this. Can't remember the name, think they scraped the investmaent plan, but the site is still around.
