I saw that monaco was producing them and those are labled ss central america. But I can't find much info about these labeled "california gold".

Any insight would be appreciated.

Weren't they coined in 2008 from gold recovered from the SS Central America? I think I saw one of these recently on Teletrade.

Neat coin but it probably isn't worth too much more than melt.

I saw those and they seem different as they mark them ss central america and where the individual coin is in terms of which one is struck although as someone who did manufacture gold medals I find it difficult to believe that they would do that at the factory.

I'd like to buy more of them. I purchased dozens of the Kellogg restrikes but this is the first one of these that's come in.

Some were made from recovered ingots, these were not.

There are a couple in the HA archives from the 2010 FUN show if you want to compare side by side.

These you can buy for close to melt, the others go for a modest premium.

Where do you search for them? Modern gold?

Found Lot 4380 at the FUN sale, sold for $4312, another at $3450, $3450, $3593 in Oct 09, etc. What was spot then? Does anyone know how to find a spot day by day history?

The ones made from the SSCA went for a lot more. I'm surprised.

Interesting. You might try Kitco for a gold chart that will give you spot on the days you are interested in.
