Mauer signs for eight years

Great to see someone sign with their hometown team, not go for the bright lights of New York or Los Angeles, and try to win a title for the town and city he really loves. Bravo Joe Mauer!!! (are you paying attention, Lebron?)

he signed with his hometown team, but he didn't exactly take a hometown discount. $3 more than Teixeira's contract for a guy who has hit 13 or more HRs once. He's great of course, but he's going to have to hit .330 with at least 25 HRs and remain at catcher to earn that salary. He claimed before he was apprehensive about signing a huge deal with the Twins due to the club not having enough money to fill in parts around him to be competitive. I guess that wasn't the case.

That contract is outrageous. I'm glad for Twins fans that he's staying in Minnesota, but that franchise has now been crippled.
  • Lol...Yeah, the Twins are crippled... Too funny, I guess we they shoulda just released him. Look the Twins have $$$, now that the cheapass owner is in the ground, maybe we will KEEP some of our stars.

seems like a fair deal all the way around

    twins will be fine

collecting RAW Topps baseball cards 1952 Highs to 1972. looking for collector grade (somewhere between psa 4-7 condition). let me know what you have, I'll take it, I want to finish sets, I must have something you can use for trade.

looking for Topps 71-72 hi's-62-53-54-55-59, I have these sets started

  • In all honesty, the alternative (trading Mauer) was simply NOT a choice the Twins org. could make. There fanbase would be DRASTICALLY damaged, more than any fanbase in sports history. I would say Joe was pretty "fair" considering todays MLB salaries. The guy is 27, has 3 batting titles, and FINALLY showed he could hit for home runs last year .

I think with the right ownership the Twins could be able to fiscally afford more of this. New stadium with bigger revenues helps. And quite honestly, for all of the talk of Minnesota as a "small market" team, Minneapolis-St Paul ain't that small. Kinda the same with the Marlins. I'd like to see it more like the old days when a team put together its best from the farm system and those guys were with the team unless they got traded. I hate seeing things like when the Twins lost Carew, Larry Hisle, and Lyman Bostock all within a year.

  • 8 years is a LONG time for a catcher; a lot could go wrong.

Wow, surprised they stepped up to $23 million per year. I thought they would go $18-$20 million tops.

What would a Johnny Bench make today? They'd have to give him the franchise.

I think this is a great contract for Mauer and I think he's worth every penny of it for the next 4 or 5 years. After that, I think that becomes too much money for a catcher in his 30s. I suppose he won't be catching anymore once Morneau's current contract ends though . . .

Glad to see he will be staying in Minn for the long term. It's good for baseball to have some long term players like that not switching teams all the time.
  • 7-0 over Boston in the 7th inning... IRONIC !

8 years is a long contract for any player

Especially a catcher. I suspect there will be call to move him to DH and/or 1B at some point to keep his health up and to get his bat in the lineup for 155+ games instead of needing all the days off of a catcher.

I'm sure Walt Jocketty wishes that the Twins had bargained a little harder here.

In the spirit of a big market fan like myself having to withstand the nonstop crying of the small market fan for years and years ......... uhhhh, YOU ARE WAY OVERSTATING THE IMPORTANCE OF THE MINNESOTA TWINS TO BASEBALL HISTORY, let alone SPORTS history. Gimme a break. Quit your crying and spend more money. Otherwise, get OUT OF MLB.

Actually, the Minnesota Twins are HUGE in baseball. Not so much in themselves, but they also represent many other teams. Should we just let the big markets play? I, for one, get so sick of turning on a nationally televised game and it ALWAYS being the Yankees,Cubs, Red Sox, Braves, or Mets. I even moderately like some of those teams, but I also want to see a Reds or Pirates game once in awhile too. I'd like to see the Royals have a chance. Or the Padres. If teams like the Twins can't survive, neither can about 12-15 others. Seeing the Twins keep their biggest star is a hope that other teams that aren't such big draws will also find a way to make it happen. Of course, I am PRO salary cap, as I have seen it work wonders in the NFL, NBA, and NHL (where teams in markets as small as New Orleans, Raleigh, Tampa, and San Antonio have found ways to win titles because they have a fair chance to compete).

One of the things I like about the Twins is that unlike most "smaller" market teams, they (a) can and will occasionally spend bigger money if they have a contender and (b) they consistently have put a competitive product on the field, not using "small market" as an excuse to gut the team, trade for prospects and lose 90+ games every year, unlike the Royals and Pirates.

Presumably the hope here is that the combination of a locked-up Mauer and a new ballpark, they can have a winning team for years with local interest and attendance high enough to justify the cost of Mauer's contract.

Can you imagine how strong the Twins would be if they had bossed up and signed Torii and Johan??? they WOULD be winning WS left and right.... They've always had the money.... they just chose to pocket it until recently. They still have THE strongest lineup in baseball. with any pitching, they could transcend..... and i say this as a frightened Tiger fan....
  • Yeah It woulda been nice to keep Torii with 2 i's but out outfield is pretty dang solid right now. Johan, yeah...That sucked that he left. Also "we" had little choice, its not like the fans are cheapazzs it was the owner Pohlad that was tight with his money, now that he is 6 feet under, maybe that will change as his kids run the show now.
