Just hung out with Dave Winfield in valet line

Just left a charity function and found myself standing next to Dave Winfield while we waited for our cars. Great guy, very personable and it was one time I was glad it took the valets a while to get the car. While we were waiting, a Bentley comes up from the valets and Larry Fitzgerald of the Cardinals comes around and gets in and drives off. Just thought I would share.

In addition to being a fabulous and versatile player, he's always been a guy who clearly cares about, and understands, the larger world. Glad to know that translates into good things in his one to one interactions.

Did you ask him about the time he held down Luke Witte, basketball player for Ohio State, while one of his teammates sucker punched him and broke his nose, jaw, and facial bones?

Nevermind. I don't want to get banned and I cannot describe my feeling for this son of a female dog without offensive language. I can only say he better pray there is no burning Hell.

As an Ohio State alumni, this question absolutely crossed my mind and I considered making a little mention but decided not to.

It is amazing - stunning, really - that he has skated on this all these years. He has never to my knowledge apologized for it and no member of the media has ever challenged him on it either.

My wife covered the Cleveland Indians in the 1990's when he was winding up his career there. He and Albert Belle were 1 and 2 on the list of players who were totally unapproachable.

"They say he hit the gull on purpose," said Yanks manager Billy Martin "They wouldn't say that if they'd seen the throws he'd been making all year. It's the first time he's hit the cutoff man."
