highest paying dealer for vintage material

I am not sure if this has been discussed before, but who is the highest paying sports card dealer if you want to sell all at once, rather than through ebay?

Let's assume this is for vintage material that books for $500 to $50,000 per card.

I contacted one dealer (as an example) who offered 60% of SMR. The cards in this instance were Mantles. I am sure dealer buy prices will vary by what material you are trying to sell, but is there one dealer who consistently pays the most????

I would bet ebay would get better prices that even the most generous dealer.

Why take 40-60% when you can get 100% on eBay.

I would agree with Dave as a dealer must be able to sell with a profit on whatever he buys. A collector does not necessarily buy with resale in mind, but if you want to see what someone may offer Levi does pay fairly well compared to other dealers.

I don't think that you will get 100% of SMR on eBay (or anywhere else for that matter). MANY cards on eBay typically sell for about 60% of SMR. HOWEVER, many of the low pop and Superstar cards will get better than 60 percent.

I think THIS BOARD would be a great place to try to sell some good vintage material. My guess is that you would get the same or more than you would from some large dealers and compared to eBay you would not have to pay their fees.

  • Of course dealers need to make their margin. So EBay is likely to get you a higher price. That said:

    1. EBay auctions sometimes fizzle. I watched a 1934 Goudey SGC 88 sell for $1850 (about 40% of SMR) in auction mode a few days ago, as an example; so auctions are sometimes iffy.
    2. EBay buy it now gives you the most control, but sometimes takes a while.
    3. Sometimes people want to sell asap, and not have to worry about an ebay scammer.
    4. Avoids ebay andf paypal fees, which may run about 10% for buy it now plus shipping.
    5. Some of us prefer to flip a group of cards quickly and not sell one at a time.

60% may not be enough to do it. Maybe 70% or 75%, although I am not sure if there are any dealers who give that much for the more popular cards (e.g. Mantle, Ruth, etc).

If anyone cares (and I know this is the wrong area), but this question is in reference to me trying to sell the following cards I picked up for a song on CL:

    1. 1962 Mantle PSA 7.5 #200
    2. 1962 Mantle PSA 7 #200
    3. 1962 Mantle PSA 6.5 ST (Stained) #200
    4. 1958 Mantle PSA 2.5 #150
    5. 1962 Mantle Switch Hitter PSA 4 #318
    6. 1962 Mantle Managers Dream PSA 6 #18

WTG there are AWESOME deals on Craigslist! How about some scams...I mean scans!

Place scans up on the board. I am interested.

    2-point-fives & stains, huh?

    [shrinking]ok, where's the better stuff?[/shrinking]
  • Good deals on CL pop up every once in a while, but most of the time they are 1988 topps image.

I just moved and have my scanner in a box, but I will try and post some soon. maybe I will use my scanner at work tonight.
  • LOL,

I think the 62 PSA 7.5 and 7 are pretty good. The others are certainly on the lower side though.

I think you would be better off unloading these cards on Ebay. I just dont see the bigger buyers in the hobby paying much for what amounts to "average" grade cards.....not to demeen the cards but they are not PSA 8.5 or 9's. (I dont mean to tick anyone off...just stating what I feel is a fact). While the better cards might present real nice I am not seeing the big hitters paying much for these cards, hence the Ebay route where you will get a nice piece of change for them.
I am on a budget and I am not afraid to use it!!
  • I appreciate your thoughts.

BUT PEOPLE CAN WE FOCUS ON THE QUESTION!!!!

I have heard Levi @ 707. Is there any other company that people think might consistently offer higher prices than Levi (if someone decides (however unwise...I know, I know) to sell to a dealer)???

My point is that you will get what a card is worth on eBay, but only a fraction of that when selling to someone who is trying to make a profit. Anyone you sell to will most likely put them on eBay at a profit, so cut out the middle man is my point. Why sell a card for $40-$60 when you can get $100. Of course I realize that you are looking for quick-cash, so disregard my point if you must.

That is not always true....sometimes Ebay sells for less........I know this from my own most recent personal experience!

You will get more for the card on the BST here than you will from a dealer. Put them on the BST for a fair price, let them go for a week, and if you don't sell them THEN take them to a dealer.

Anyway, I agree with cwazzy, post them on the BST, you'll probably sell those type of cards very quickly.

  • OK, Ill remove my political comparison comment. I don't know what BST is. I am a newbie here

    Plus, someone PMd me this:

All Stars Cards out of Kansas has a BUY LIST that tells what they pay for certain cards in certain grades. Sometimes they pay more for what I have seen comparable cards go for on Ebay. For example, I had a 1957 Topps Ted Williams #1 PSA 6.......the best offer I got on Ebay was for $175 (and then Ebay and PayPal take out fees),....All Star Cards paid $200 - NO FEES!!!!!

Any body ever work with them.

BST is the Buy, Sell, Trade Forum on here (located under the sports talk section). I'd list your cards with a price, and scans, and you should do well.

My experience is if he needs it, Levi will pay more than I could get on eBay (many of the cards I have sold them in the past were cards I've bought on eBay and I am turning them for a deceent profit).

Some of the All-Star cards percentages on their buy page look worthwhile, I've never sent them anything from their list though.
  • fkwfkw Posts: 1,766 ✭✭
Why sell to a dealer? He need to make a profit and will obviously offer far less than current value for an item (because he needs to flip it), unless its a very rare "type card" he can sit on (fish) with a high price.

Sell to a collector, they pay the highest for all collectibles. A middleman wont.

  • What about selling to Mr. Mint? He will tell you how much he pays for cards, low ball you, and then make a snide remark about you all in about a minutes time. But wouldn't you feel comfortable getting less knowing you sold to a hobby icon. I've got to say the poster who recently wrote he would rather set his cards on fire than to sell to Rosen was dead on MINT with that comment.
From what I can tell, 707 is the DOLLAR STORE compared to deans_cards. For what that guy charges, if I ever bought anything from him I would expect it to be delivered to me in a frickin' limo.

  • BST is best if you know what you want for each card or there is good price data in VCP for it. If high grade low pop then ebay or auction house is the place. If you just dont want to do all the work of selling you might contact one of the consignment houses on ebay like davids vintage or Just collect. They will sell your cards on ebay for you for a set % fee and will do their best to bring you in the most money because they then get max profits. IMO no reason to sell to a dealer unless you need the cash today.
  • cardbendercardbender Posts: 1,831 ✭✭
The best person to sell them is yourself. Put them on ebay for a month with a reasonable BIN with 10-15% for the fee's factored into your price. You'll do just fine. Cut out the middleman. The clearer and nicer your scans looks will also help with your sale.

If that doesn't work you can always try the dealer you mentioned (All-Star cards who's a good guy and solid buyer) or 707 who pays pretty strong for Mantles.

The '62 Mantles 7 and 7.5s would seem to be easy to sell at SMR or VCP. On the lower grade stuff, expect a lower % of SMR prices.

If you provide scans and can send the cards first since you are new then I'll be more than happy to make you an offer on all of them.

I am shocked to hear of anyone getting decent sales selling to Levi, in my experience his offers were insulting at best.

    In my opinion..

#2-Ebay BINS with best offer attached to

Are we still assuming these are $500-$50000 per card? LOL. If you need cash now, stick them on ebay with a low starting bid.

It is in their monthly catalog they send thru the mail. They are AWESOME to deal with. On my 1957 Ted Williams PSA 6, all the Ebay lowballers wanted to give me between $125-$175 for the card. After fees, it would be less than that. ASC paid $200, NO FEES!!!

On their home page, along the left side you'll see a link that says Get Catalog Now. Click on that and you'll get the current catalog. It's 84 pages and the buy list starts on page 77.
  • Levi bought my mantles. I think he is the highest paying.
