Everyone knows a 16 seed has never beat a 1 seed; but several came close!

The two that most come to mind are in 1989 when Princeton came within a couple of last second shots of beating Georgetown (60-59) and of course, local Murray State in 1990 took Michigan State to the distance, being the only 16 seed to force OT (but of course the Spartans prevailed 74-71). That's the most serious challenges a 16 seed has made.

As far as I know, 2006 was the last time a 16 seed gave a good scare:

UConn avoids ultimate shock in 2006; Albany led by TEN early in the 2nd half

And I think in 1997 or 1998 Kansas trailed a 16 seed with 5 minutes and change left.

Think it'll ever happen in the men's tournament (it did happen in the women's tournament in 1998; Harvard over Stanford)? It just better not happen to us! image
